Warm - Cold - Warm - Cold = Bad beer?

A few years back, we had a party at my parents place. There was a couple of coors left over, that were sitting in a bucket of ice outside. the ice melted, and the water became warm and kinda nasty looking (I think they forgot about them for a few days...) but one day they washed off the bottles...

    secondary fermenter confusion

I've done a bunch of reading on this subject, on this site as well as john palmers book. I was planning on fermenting my first beer (Midwest autumn amber ale) for about a week, then moving it to the secondary for a couple weeks, watching the hydrometer readings of course (supposed to ferment to...

how do you guys come up with names for your homebrews?

hmm alrighty. So far i've come up with these for brewery names: Mosh(gf's idea, kinda fitting cuz me and mosh pits get along very well) Spare Change(something I found online) Train Bridge(reminiscent of where my friends and I would go and hang in our spare time in middle and high school) Impala...

how do you guys come up with names for your homebrews?

In my excitement to get started, I've been trying to come up with a name for my "brewery" so I can make a cool logo (i love graphic design stuff) and then start naming my beers accordingly, but when it comes to naming things my artistic side runs and hides... so yea, I'd like to hear where you...

    question about yeast

With the kit I bought from midwest, I purchased the American Ale Wyeast Propagator 1056 smack pack. I was just doing some more reading, and it seems as though maybe this wasn't the best decision, and I will need to make a starter for this? any advice for this when i go to use it?

Finally ordered my supplies and ingredients

I got the starter kit from midwest w/ the better bottle, 2 cases of amber bottles, and their autumn amber ale kit upgraded to the wyyest smack pack. And I found a turkey frier setup for like 45 bucks plus shipping (found here) oh and some wine yeast to start on some apfelwein :D Has...

Any reason why not to stick to pre-established recipes?

Mmmkay, thanks! A whole bunch of my friends have been telling me to make some sorta beer with an insane ABV, and call it f*ck you ale... Yea, I've been told that a few times before about the extreme brewing methods. Not all the recipes in this book are "extreme" and I've got a few lined up...

Any reason why not to stick to pre-established recipes?

kinda an OT question: is it possible to bump up the ABV % just by adding some extra sugar/honey/etc Man I really want to get started on brewing! It's gonna take a lot of self control to wait till it's done fermenting.... It's not like I can RDWHAHB, I have no home brews yet....

Any reason why not to stick to pre-established recipes?

yea, that's pretty much where I was planning on heading. Like "well this beer is great, but lets see what happens if I use these hops instead" thanks guys

Any reason why not to stick to pre-established recipes?

I have this book, Extreme Brewing, and I really am liking the many of the recipes in there, including the not so extreme ones. I see many of you start making your own recipes after like your first or second batch, while I was interested in continuing on with a bunch more of what's in my book...

    whoa, i made beer.

I don't even have my supplies in yet, and I'm already dreaming up what I want to have in my homebrews, and can't wait to split a few of them with my close friends.... Speaking of I.T. geeks, I by no means am one, but I do know html, javascript, css, visual basic, a little bit of C++ and have...

About to purchase my supplies, looking for advice

Wow thanks so much guys! I'm really looking forward to starting my first brew this summer. I'll look into one of those turkey fryer things, I was iffy on how my gas range would heat up a 30qt pot. I've started reading the online version of "how to brew" and will be picking up some of those other...

About to purchase my supplies, looking for advice

Well, as the title states I'm about to go order the first of my supplies I'll need to start learning how to homebrew, there isn't really a homebrew store near me (Livingston, NJ) So I'm going to need to rely on the information I can gather to learn where and where not to order from. I'm picking...

    Hey! from central jersey

Just wanted to say whats up to everyone here. I've always been an creative/artistic type person (playing guitar, painting, automotive fabrication, etc) and I've always been curious about home brewing. I'm a big fan of craft beers, especially what dogfish head has to offer. I found "Extreme...
