Barrel-aging primer, introduction, or other resources?

Is there a good primer or other introduction to barrel aging beers? A friend is offering me a couple of small whiskey barrels, one five gallon, one three, to use to try making a (hopefully worthy) barrel-aged beer. We both like dark belgians, and I have had a few nice barrel-aged interpretations...

What the hell is causing this purple ring in my krausen

Yes. It was dry hopped with 5.5 ounces of Citra and Mosaic T90 pellets. I use a hop cannon to limit the O2 ingress during dry hopping.

What the hell is causing this purple ring in my krausen

I haven’t heard of the oxidation—> purple link, but I’m pretty anal about cold side oxidation so I don’t think that’s the cause. And I’ve followed the same cold-side process for multiple batches, so I don’t know what’s different about this batch.

What the hell is causing this purple ring in my krausen

Resurrecting a dormant thread… I recently had the same issue with my CF10. It’s several years old with many batches and no new equipment so there is no way this is due to machine oils. The beer turned out great, possibly my best hazy to date, so I’m at a bit of a loss. Of course the beer was so...

Fermentrack: Fermentation monitoring & BrewPi-www Replacement for Raspberry Pi

So the root problem seems to have been a poor choice of power supply (a 5W iPhone cube) for the Raspberry Pi. I swapped it for a 10W iPad charger and it seems to be working, although the RPI is still giving me undervoltage warnings in syslog. I probably have an official RPI PSU somewhere, but...

Fermentrack: Fermentation monitoring & BrewPi-www Replacement for Raspberry Pi

I'm back and would like to understand what is going on here. Can you point me where to look to see what is going wrong? I'm not seeing anything in /var/log, which is where Google seems to think NGINX will put it's logs.

Fermentrack: Fermentation monitoring & BrewPi-www Replacement for Raspberry Pi

I'm experiencing an intermittent "Internal Server Error" problem with Fermentrack. I'm traveling and trying to monitor my fermentation remotely. It was working fine for several days after I left, but for the past several days it works about one time in 10-15 tries. The rest of the time I get one...

Spike glycol chiller -- flakey pump power connector?

Thanks. I solved this a couple days back but hadn’t gotten time to post. The problem was definitely corrosion in the barrel connector. I cut it out and replaced it with a double pair of crimp-on spade connectors. Wrapped them with electrical tape and rearranged the wiring so as little as...

Spike glycol chiller -- flakey pump power connector?

I have had a Spike glycol chiller (repackaged from Penguin Chillers) for about two years. Until this week it has worked mostly fine to chill my CF10 (although cold crashing when the summer humidity peaks in my brewery is a separate challenge). I count myself a generally happy customer. The...

Grain mill project - power drill driven

More like table saw, band saw. They will both cut wood, but use completely different mechanisms and certain cuts can only be made with one or the other (e.g., try making a rabbet with a bandsaw or cutting wide veneer with a table saw). Rheostats and triacs also work in completely different...

Grain mill project - power drill driven

Actually I don’t believe that is correct. Most modern speed controllers use pulse width modulation using a TRIAC which is much more efficient (and thus less hot) than a rheostat.

Grain mill project - power drill driven

I was under the impression that a speed controller would not work with a variable speed drill, but I can’t find where I read that. Bottom line: please share your experience with this.

Gauge oil leak in Spike All-in-one PRV?

No. I always apply positive pressure (usually via spunding) before cold crashing.

Gauge oil leak in Spike All-in-one PRV?

I disassembled and cleaned my Spike All-in-one PRV yesterday and found what looks to be a black oil residue on the end of the pressure gauge. Admittedly I hadn't cleaned this in a while as my normal process is to mount the PRV on a 6" spool to keep it well above the krausen and just spray some...

TiltBridge - Tilt-to-WiFi Device for Tilt Hydrometer

Bought the recommended parts from Aliexpress and it flashed and worked right away. However, after a few days the screen developed two one-pixel wide white vertical lines, separated by a one-pixel wide dark line (perhaps working normally?), roughly in line with the second "i" in "TiltBridge"...

Do I have enough co2 to dispense a keg for a party today?

My brother had a CO2 leak one time when I was visiting; zero PSI in the keg and the tank. We managed to serve several pitchers using a CO2 tire inflator, a ball-point pen (for a MacGyver'ed adapter), and a piece of tubing with a ball-lock gas connector. Worked great. Haven't done the math to...
