    BIAB to Traditional All-Grain Question

Thanks guys. I will go get some rice hulls and take my cooler/mlt for a spin. If the sparge gets stuck, I can always transfer everything to my BIAB bag and finish that way. That sounds like a big mess waiting to happen! I did a search here and it looks like .75 lbs should be...

    Adjusting for efficiency while mashing

I have a few BIAB batches under my belt and will try batch sparging for the first time this weekend. I am brewing a dry stout with a pretty low OG. I have been getting 70-78% efficiency with BIAB, but figure I might get efficiency as low as 60% batch sparging until I get the process dialed in...

    BIAB to Traditional All-Grain Question

I have done several BIAB batches over the last couple months. However, I have decided to try my hand at batch sparging. I have all the equipment and am ready to roll this weekend. Unfortunately, I bought the grains for a BIAB batch a week ago (before deciding to switch to batch sparging)...

    A couple shank questions

I am about to plunge into kegging and plan to order a kit tomorrow or Friday (black Friday sales), but have a couple questions. 1. I plan to upgrade my kit with stainless perlicks. However, the I can't upgrade the shanks online at keg connection. Is there any problem pairing ss faucets with...

Need Help with 1st Kegging Purchase

Thanks for the help. Based on the posts above, I think I will just go with picnic taps. It will cost an extra $130 to get 2 stainless taps vs. picnics. At some point I can always upgrade. Also, I will make some calls to local welding supply places...I will probably just pay a deposit...

Need Help with 1st Kegging Purchase

I have read a lot of posts and am ready to take the kegging plunge. I looked at Keg Connection, Birdman, Midwest, and Beverage Factory. I think Keg Connection is the best deal. Are these comperable? Keg Connection: 2 kegs, 5 lbs. co2, 2 faucets, shipping = $276...

Clone Beer Founder's Breakfast Stout Clone

I just brewed this for the first time yesterday. I decided to push the limits of my BIAB setup. Planned to brew 5.3 gallons (figured I'd lose 3 to trub). My kettle is 8.5 gallons...I couldn't have brewed with any more grains than this. Ended up with 75% efficience and added a bit of water...

Using copper to weigh down hop bag?

I recently used a hop bag wrapped around my siphon to prevent clogs. This might prevent the need for copper, ss, or marbles.

    Harvest Yeast from Primary Bucket?

I tried it. It didn't work. I got a little yease initially, but then a "channel" developed and the beer started flowing. No big deal. Just racked to secondary and took yeast from the primary.

    Harvest Yeast from Primary Bucket?

I am going to brew a batch tonight and plan to use S-04 yeast. I have a batch in a primary bucket with a S-04 yeast cake. The cake is about 1/2" over the primary bucket spigot. It seams like I can just use the spigot to draw some yeast out of the primary bucket and pitch. I think this is...

    Hello Fellow Washingtonians!!

I just attended my first HoPS (homebrewers club in Spanaway). I enjoyed the meeting. Good group of people. Lots of good brews to sample. It sounds like they will probably start meeting in Tacoma at Mash. This will allow them to brew at the club location.

    Mini Fridge Question

I am interested in kegging, but don't want to spend $250 for a new chest freezer and thermostat. Would something like this work for a couple corny kegs? http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/app/3265724432.html It is a 6.75 cf mini fridge for $75.

    Efficiency Calculations

Thanks for the advice. I downloaded the trial version a couple weeks ago. I like it and will purchase it at some point. I am doing my own calculations to start with so I will understand how brewing (and beersmith) works.

    Efficiency Calculations

Thanks for the help. I updated my brew spreadsheet preboil volume, preboil gravity, anticipated post boil gravity, water correction volumes, flux capacitor capacity, etc. What I have learned more than anything else is that I am a total beer geek. :rockin:

    Efficiency Calculations

Okay. My next question is about how to use this on brew day. Let's say the simple recipe I describe above has a target OG of 1.049 (75% efficiency). Let's assume I will boil off 1 gallon per hour for 1 hour. Therefore, I am targeting preboil gravity like this: 1 + (.75 efficency x 360...

    Efficiency Calculations

I am new to brewing and want to make sure I am calculating and using efficiency calcs correctly. Please check my math & logic: 10 lbs of 2-row with a gravity of 1.036 = 360 points If I brew a 5.5 gallon batch with this grain bill, my maximum specific gravity will by calculated like this...

    Official Broken Hydrometer Count

HAT TRICK!!! 674, 675, 676 I just started brewing a few months ago. I broke 3 in just 4 batches. I haven't even bottled batches 3 and 4 yet. Just ordered a refractometer.

Sparge BIAB vs. Regular BIAB Efficiency

Good point. After just 4 batches of beer, I am working on consistency. I am recording most of what I do (temps, times, water volumes, gravity, etc.). I am starting to modify my process based on results. I must admit the most consistant thing I am doing is breaking hydrometers. I have now...

Sparge BIAB vs. Regular BIAB Efficiency

I had trouble finding previous threads about this, although I am sure they are out there. I sparged my first batch since my kettle is only 8 gallons. I got 78% efficiency on a session beer (1.04 OG +/-) I decided to scale down batch 2 so I could do a true BIAB (no sparge). I got 82%...
