    Hop Help

Thanks for your help. I will rework the recipe when I can get in front of Beersmith and post my results. Can you explain the importance of whirlpooling? I believe it is stirring the hell out of the wort while it cools, but I don't understand why except to preciptate solids and get some hop...

    Hop Help

I listed it as English because it is often compared to fuggles and is related to fuggles.

    Hop Help

Thanks for the advice. I think I will increase the Simcoe. After all, I bought hops in bulk a few months ago so I could brew hoppy beers without feeling so bad about the price tag. I plan to ferment with S-05. OG will be 1.065 - 1.07. My last 4 batches have been session beers, so I...

    Hop Help

I am fairly new to brewing and trying to put together an IPA recipe. I bought a bunch of hops a few months ago. As I've brewed more batches, I have found that I really love American ales (Pale, brown, IPA) and am not too crazy about English anymore. I would like to use up some of my English...

    GOOD on Netflix STREAMING?

Not sure if it's been said already, but The Killing is a pretty good series. My only pet peeve is that it is set in Seattle, but a lot of the local references are wrong.

    Session CDA Advice

I would like to cut back on my beer calories/alcohol a bit. I figured a low OG CDA might work. Grain Bill: 7 lbs. 2-Row 1 lb Crystal 60 .5 lb Carafa III .5 lb Chocolate Malt Hops: 1 ounce Amarillo @ 15 minutes 1 ounce Cascade @ 15 minutes 1 ounce Amarillo @ 3 minutes 1 ounce...

    Visiting phoenix

Thanks. Went to four peak's happy hour. Great beer, food, and prices. Wish there was one in my neighborhood.

    Visiting phoenix

I am in Paradise valley for a few days and would like to visit a couple local breweries. I have a list, but would prefer recommendations from fellow home brewers. Good food is a must since swmbo is with me. If you can recommend a specific beer, that would be great too. Thanks!

    Best deals on keg systems?

I looked around quite a bit. Kegconnection was the cheapest. You might want to watch homebrewfinds.com for sales.

    Wort Aeration

That is a good observation about the starting point of the oxygen. In the original BBR interview he attributed this oxygenation to splashing of the water during transfer to carboy/bucket. However, in the next BBR show, he called to apologize. His O2 meter was giving false high readings at...

    Wort Aeration

If you listen to the BBR interview, the guy seemed pretty compitent. He talked about oxygen saturation in water. I believe he said 100% saturation was about 8.4 PPM. He used a more precise decimal, but I think was about 8.4. You can back into PPM. If he measured 90% saturation, it would...

    Wort Aeration

I am fairly new to brewing and have started listening to basic brewing radio. BBR interviewed a home brewer in 2005 who compared oxygenation of water via aquarium pump/stone and shaking. He had the same question as the OP and decided to buy an o2 meter on ebay to find the answer. You can...

    Fuzzy/blurry refractometer

Sometimes my refractometer is very difficult to read. The numbers are easy to read, just turn the eyepiece to focus. However, sometimes the blue/white border is very blurry. Is it due to solids like grain bits between the glasses? Something else? Thanks

    Adjusting for efficiency while mashing

Since I am switching from BIAB to batch sparge, I expect I might get poor efficiency for a couple batches. I was just looking for advice regarding compensating for this. A previous post recommended adding a little DME or lengthening the boil. I will use one of these solutions.

    Adjusting for efficiency while mashing

I also get good efficiency with BIAB. I am switching for a couple reasons. First, I recently brewed a batch of high gravity beer with BIAB. I reached the limit of my equipment with 20 lbs of grain in an 8.5 gallon pot. It was total pain in the a$$ and a giant mess. I got 78% efficiency...
