    Water quality question (sulphate content)

Oh by all means, you can do that too..... The only mineral that is questionable (at least for my liking) is the sodium. The salty flavor can easily become problematic. Other than that, the rest looks just fine.

    Anybody up for a riddle?

    Water quality question (sulphate content)

If it were me, I would go with the half RO option. YES, it will drop your other minerals by 50% BUT it will drop the sulfate as well. The sodium could stand to be cut in half anyway. Then just minimal additions of some basic stuff and you could build them all back up to preferred levels. I...

Homebrew clubs in Vermont / Northern VT

I did the same sorts of things. Hosted a learn to Homebrew Day last November, did a big gathering for big brew day last may. We had 4 brewers and about 10 guests. Went to new York last weekend to a friends to teach him how to homebrew. We currently have 4 active members and 5 interested people...

    Calculate my efficiency

Sounds good to me. Plenty of time to cool down. Refractometer was calibrated correctly using distilled water??

    Calculate my efficiency

    Calculate my efficiency

So to be clear... You took a sample of wort (at the 9 gallon volume) How did you measure the gravity? Refractometer or hydrometer? If you used a hydrometer and tested at high temps, then your gravity reading is definitely skewed.

    Calculate my efficiency

I concede my point now that i am rested and thinking clearly. Not sure what I was thinking about last night other than it did not make sense to me how doing more work and sparging would make the process more efficient. Sorry for the confusion. I would love to hear more about your process...

    Calculate my efficiency

His mash efficiency would have DECREASED... Using all the same numbers from above posts. If he had continued sparging to his preboil volume he would have gotten 12.88 gallons at 1.041 12.88×41= 528 points 528÷700 = .75 or 75% efficiency The amount of water DOES figure into the calculations...

Successes and failures with grain mills, what mill has worked best for you?

Monster Mill 2.0 for me. To each his own is my belief because I have seen Corona mills, BC and every other kind do a great job. It all depends on how much you want to spend. But QUALITY comes at a price. Hopper size arguments are a moot point because with a little DIY ingenuity, you can make a...

    Simple Yeast Storage Procedure

Unless I am grossly missing what you are saying, here is my thought. An infection WOULD BE the cause of the problems if you have a tainted slurry. If you are using straight 05 from the packet, there would not be an infection.

    Brewtastrophe or not...?

This is exactly right. If you think that a little dirt in your grains is a terrible thing, you would suffer a small stroke if you saw the amount of weevils that were probably on it at some point.

    Simple Yeast Storage Procedure

    1) The answer to this is debatable. I use most of mine 5 generations but on occasion have used them as many as 7 or 8 generations. 2) Yes. Generally speaking, you will not want to use a yeast from a dark or hoppy beer to make a light or non-hoppy one. 3) Generally, you can assume 1 to 1.5...

Anyone bag a deer this year?

I am all about the meat as well. All this mumbo-jumbo about farm-raised, free range, organic..... Venison is the original natural meat and I can fill my freezer with over 100# in a good season for around $30 for a license (and the price of my time which can be debated but my wife says that...

    Simple Yeast Storage Procedure

No and no.... You are not pressure canning the yeast, just using the mason jar as a storage vessel.
