How do I avoid chunky yeast?

Thanks for the tips. The yeast bed was actually pretty compact, more compact then most of my other brews, but I'll try your tips and tighten my technique to avoid racking too much yeast over during my next batch. And I agree with you about the pouring and knowledge of yeast strains. I got a 1/3...

How do I avoid chunky yeast?

So here's a question for you guys. I used White Labs WLP002 English Ale yeast recently on a brown ale. The strain of yeast was somewhat chunky. Now I just chalked this up to being a characteristic of that particular strain. When it came time to bottle my beer, all that chunkiness sat in the...

Belgian Tripel Smells Like Sour Milk

I just brewed a Belgian Tripel as well, I used White Labs Abbey Ale. Same characteristics, a very sour, funky smelling fermentation. I just chalked it up to being typical of belgian yeast. I just reracked it into secondary on friday, and tasting it as well I was blown away by how much the beer...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Found a 12v 900mA PS late last night. I hooked that up this morning and there is definitely more power now. I can get a nice 2L vortex, but it only reaches about halfway down the flask, is this a problem? Another problem I'm having is adding the washer. I'm having a real hard time centering...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

I just built mine yesterday. Slight problem, though. Everything works fine, fan spins, rheostat regulates the speed, power switch works... but my fan isn't spinning fast enough. I am using a 5V 310mA Power Supply. What Amperage are you guys using. The voltage shouldn't play a part in the amount...

    Cautious about too much vanilla.

So I'm currently brewing a Belgian Tripel. The recipe I'm using is Randy Moshers Three Nipple Tripel. I've tasted this before when my cousin brewed it, but he set aside 1 Gal during secondary and added 1 vanilla bean to that gallon. The vanilla addition came out fantastic in comparison to the...

    Second Beer Ever

American and Southern English can go up to 35 SRM by BJCP standards. My brown was just as dark as his. Unless your entering into a competition, personally I think color is the least important aspect of a finished brew.

    Second Beer Ever

That sounds exactly like the brown I just brewed. 5 Gallons was gone in 3 days. Whats the recipe?

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

May be a stupid question but I know very little about yeast, reusing yeast, and culturing yeast. What are the advantages and disadvantages to washing yeast/slanting yeast? From what I understand washing yeast you are reusing old/used yeast, where slanting is creating brand new yeast.

4 weeks to brew and bottle - help!

I was given 10-days notice for a Columbus Day Party, two weeks ago. The buddy throwing the party wanted to try a few of my homebrews, unfortunately I had nothing available to drink, nothing I was particularly proud of at least. I brewed a brown the next day, and in 9 days, bottle conditioned, it...

First All-Grain, Question about batch sparging

Went smoothly today. It was mostly just stressing out over something that I knew in my head was going to be easy. I mashed my 12 lbs. of grain with 4.5 gallons of water at 148°F. It dropped to around 140°F by the end of the 60 minutes, which I wasn't necessarily happy with. I wanted a low mash...

First All-Grain, Question about batch sparging

Yeah Creek. I was turned onto that vidseries early on in my brewing. I've probably watched it at least 10 times now leading up to all-grain. That seems the be the method I will go with. One thing I left out is that I also see some people sparging only enough for their boil, around 6.5 gals for...

    Show Us Your Label

I like it. I love images like that. That old handwritten, hand drawn type stuff. I find da vinci's sketches far more interesting than his actual paintings. This reminds me of that in a way. A minor suggestion, not sure if you want to hear it. I think the beer information blends in too much...

First All-Grain, Question about batch sparging

So I'm finally getting into al-grain brewing. I've done all my research, read multiple books, watched quite a few videos. One thing that I can't get a complete grasp around is batch sparging. I see some people add a gallon of hot water to the mash with 5-10 minutes left, I see some people never...

    Three-Nipple Tripel advice

I picked up Radical Brewing about a month ago and I'm planning on brewing my first recipe from this book this weekend. Now if you have the book you are familiar with the fact that Mosher doesn't include step-by-step directions for any of the recipes, he gives you the basic information and that...

Something I love almost as much as beer...

Brewing up a Business is an awesome read. More of a business book than brewing, but entertaining to read none the less. Good lessons to apply to all businesses as well, not just brewing. Like many others, my other beer books include: Complete Guide to Homebrewing, Extreme Brewing, and Tasting...
