This fermentor is the Grainfather Conical Fermenter Basic Cooling Edition. It has been used four times (it's the Pro + temp control: dual valve tap, temperature controller, pump, tubing). Outstanding unit. I'm going to be upping my batch sizes and would rather have a single fermentor than...

Relay to Turn On/Off Glycol Chiller Pump?

Once I had a day off work, I was able to wrap my head around what the solid state relay was doing. I kept looking in confusion about how to connect the input. Then, I realized it's just a gate. Derp. Wired it all up today. I made all of the connections temporary for now. No cutting of any of...

Relay to Turn On/Off Glycol Chiller Pump?

Thanks, @helterscelter. I'm trying to identify how to properly wire a solid state relay (I realized I have one laying around) for this purpose. Any tips?

Relay to Turn On/Off Glycol Chiller Pump?

I've decided to do the following: IoT Power Relay plugged into the wall. Kalinka-Ice pump plugged into the "normally off" outlet of the relay. Grainfather Conical controller's 12VDC output connected to the relay to activate it. Should be a pretty simple setup that I can reverse if the need...

    Grainfather!!

I tend to make all of my recipes in BeerSmith, then I export them as BeerXML and import them to the Grainfather app shortly before brewing. This is partly because I've been using BeerSmith for many years and I'm used to it.

Relay to Turn On/Off Glycol Chiller Pump?

I got a great deal from a buddy at work on a used Kalinka-Ice Glycol Chiller. I also have a Grainfather Conical fermentor with the cooling pump kit. Yeah, I realize none of this is DIY. It violates my need to do DIY stuff too! Here's my dilemma, and where the DIY is going to come in: - The...

Recommendation for a Pump or Motorized Ball Valve?

I acquired a glycol chiller to use with my Grainfather Conical Cooling kit. I contacted Grainfather and they advised against anything more than 5% propylene glycol. The controller's DC output is 12V. So, I either need to: 1) Get a 12V DC submersible pump capable of pumping a higher...

    Grainfather!!

I recieved my replacement and will be off to the races tomorrow with a Belgian Pale Ale. My Grainfather Conical with cooling kit arrived as well, so I'll be fermenting in that for the first time. I put together a setup using my chest freezer, a bucket of water for the pump, and a wort chiller...

Update on my Grainfather pump woes: Grainfather is sending me a replacement pump. Great customer service!

    Grainfather!!

Tried those from the standard bag of tricks I've seen around. It's 100% consistent that it won't pump at all once I've reached a boil for a minute or two. The only fix after that point is to wait for it to cool quite a bit (Usually to around 180 °F), at which point it will work again. Stuff...

    Grainfather!!

Thanks, @treacheroustexan! I actually just remembered that I have an original Grainfather Control Box in addition to the Connect, so I tried the same little experiment with that one. If I let the water boil for a few minutes, the pump will not work anymore. 100% sure now that the pump is my...

    Grainfather!!

Okay, in the interest of figuring out what went wrong, I spent a couple of hours yesterday and today trying to diagnose the problem. It appears to be related to the pump, not the wort chiller. The reason I did not experience issues while cleaning the unit before the first brew is because I only...

    Local Only Trade (LOT)

Howdy! I don't quite meet the requirements for participation, but I'd be interested in a trade. I live in Southern California and I miss some of the beers from New England (lived there for 5.5 years, been here for 5.5 years). Should I wait until I have 100 posts before getting in on this...

    Grainfather!!

I tried connecting/disconnecting/reconnecting several times and even removed the ball and spring. Unfortunately that didn't seem to be the issue. I've been unable to diagnose what went wrong at this time, which is more frustrating than having an issue in the first place. At this point, if it...

    Grainfather!!

I did clean it, and I believe it worked then. I cleaned it again after brewing and pushing CO2 through it and it seems to be fine. Still no idea what happened. My second brew with it will be outside in case I need the old chiller again. Hopefully it was a fluke.

    Grainfather!!

Just through the chiller. Works through recirculation arm, works through a different chiller. I blasted through it with CO2 and nothing came out but moisture. I just connected it back with plain water and it seems to work. Really unsure what could have gone wrong. My grain wasn't overcrushed...
