    Question about aluminum

Hey guys, I just converted my 9 galllon aluminum pot to have a ball valve (successful!) to use as my HLT and after the test boil to test for leaks (again, successful!) I noticed a few small areas where it looked like the passive oxidized layer had been removed. The entire inside of the...

    Is my crush too fine?

Perhaps this video will help: How to Adjusting the Barley Crusher Grain Mill - YouTube

Check my pic, please...what should I do?

Yeah, I use left over Starsan solution in the airlock.

Check my pic, please...what should I do?

OK, that's what I was thinking, but like I said, it looked pretty damned gross when I first saw it...the stringy snotty bubbles must have all popped in the 15-20 minutes between the first viewing and the photo, plus I've never seen anything floating on top of my beer after a week of fermenting...

Check my pic, please...what should I do?

OK. The only bit of concern I still have is that our power went out one night and the temperature in the basement dipped to 57F and the yeast I used was Safale-05 which has a temp threshhold of 59F-75F. Any chance the cold caused the yeast to go dormant prematurely, hence the high gravity...

Check my pic, please...what should I do?

Hey all, Opened up my primary today, one week after fermentation began and saw what looked like stringy bubbly snot on the surface of the beer. Beer smelled good but since I'd never seen anything floating on top of ther beer after one week of fermenting I got a little concerned. Took a...

    Not stuck, bot slooooow sparge....normal?

All my hardware on the MLT is 3/8 though, I'd have to find a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter, although I'm sure they exist.

Oh, and I forgot to add that my mill is a Barley Crusher set at the factory setting (.039", I think?)

    Not stuck, bot slooooow sparge....normal?

Well, it is a large diameter braid...one meant for hot water tanks and it didn't get crushed...it held up just fine. I think I might go look for one that has a looser weave...this one's pretty tight.

    Not stuck, bot slooooow sparge....normal?

Yeah, at least it wasn't stuck, that's true. My MLT is a 5 gallon Rubbermaid cooler with a SS braid (3/4" I think? for a hot water tank) The grain bill was 10.75 lbs. I think the holes in the SS might be too tight as a vorlauf wasn't necessary, even though I still did it. No grain material...

    Not stuck, bot slooooow sparge....normal?

Hey guys, I did my first "real" (non-BIAB) AG batch the other day and after a gallon or so had drained, the first runnings and then subsequent sparge runnings slowed to a crawl. They never stopped entirely but slowed down reaaaally sllooowwwwww. I eventually collected 6.6 gallons of 1.048...

    Stuck sparge!

16 hours later and no ferm....

Well, boy do I feel stupid, lol. I've got pretty good activity in the airlock now...about a bubble every 7-10 seconds and it looks like it's pickin up. RDWHAHB from now on! :)

16 hours later and no ferm....

yes. I barely have to frig with the lid at all and it "glubs".

Reading just before pitching was 1.062. Are you suggesting I open my bucket during fermentation and take a sample?

16 hours later and no ferm....

OK, 24 hours later and the pressure has increased on the airlock but still no bubbles...good sign?

16 hours later and no ferm....

Thanks Revvy! I'll wait, as painful as it's gonna be. Like I said earlier, my airlock is almost always going nuts by this point. But I'll heed your advice, Jedi brewer. Oh, btw, my wife just walked by as I was reading your post, saw your avatar, took a closer look and said "Worry not! Relax...
