American Pale Ale Russian River Row 2 Hill 56 Clone

As long as your hydrometer is calibrated to read 1.000 @ 68F then yes, .004. However, most hydrometers that I have seen are calibrated @ 60F, it should say somewhere on the hydrometer.

    Beer Tasted Great Until Kegging

At what pressure did you carb? Metallic taste is often a result of over-cabonation. Also, I'd give it at least another week before sampling again, at one week it's still a bit green...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

I believe Martin Brungard recommends adding any salts/acids to the strike liquor before heating. I don't remember the exact reason, but if you search a bit you'll probably find it.

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

@Braufessor, if this is too off-topic I will move it to it's own post. Obviously, if people want to discuss this in depth they should start a new thread. (This is a paraphrased synopsis from Denny's BYO article which also references Palmer, White and Zainasheff) It talks about the three...

Need a good recipe for St. Patrick's Day

Sure, you have to go with what works for you. It is an interesting read though...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Do you have access to the latest BYO? (Jan/Feb 2017) Denny Conn's "Fast Lagers" article offers some insights on how this works. Apparently the "clean-up" does not work in the way I believe a lot of home brewers, myself included, think it does.

    tilt v.s. brew bug

True, I don't think that's possible right now, but it would be cool if BrewPi and Tilt would collaborate, you could probably base the set-point change off of an average SG over 12 - 24 hrs. For this type of application I wouldn't think pinpoint accuracy would be required.

    1 vs 2 Liter Starter

Look at the forum post linked at the end of Denny's article for a detailed explanation of the SNS starter. I believe the shaking part is meant to be a low tech way to initially oxygenate the starter wort, after that no shaking required. I don't mind a little tech so I skip the shaking and...

    Brew Boss Systems

Well now you know from experience :D 300u would be fine without re-circulation, I suppose that's why Darin specs 800u baskets. I use a 500u but still do a bit of babysitting and stirring...

    Yet another mini-regulator thread

In the past I have gotten what could be considered a metallic taste from over-carbonating. Look up "carbonic bite" My understanding is that the main negative effects of oxidation (paper or cardboard taste) usually don't show up until some period of time has elapsed, like a month or more...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

I primarily get RO from Whole Foods, mostly because they have a two spout machine and I'm typically getting ten gallons, I also use another local grocery store. I always check any RO water I get with a TDS meter and it has always been in single digits. In the beginning I did send a sample of the...

    Yet another mini-regulator thread

Purging your keg to prevent oxidation is one thing and a worthy goal to pursue. But, in this particular instance if the beer wasn't already carbonated before you took it home, it's going to take a lot longer than two days to carbonate it, assuming you took it home and simply connected to your...

    Quick Lager Method *UPDATED*

This has me a bit confused, I was actually going to start a new thread, but I believe this is relevant to this discussion. In the latest BYO article there is a sentence in there that recommends a slow ramp (~5F/day) to lager temps to prevent temperature shock and lipid extraction. This is...

How to seal the plastic bases of my kegs?

There is a product available at auto stores called "Back to Black" for polishing black trim on cars. This should remove the oxidation on the rubber bits of the keg which causes all the streaking and marking. Unfortunately some elbow grease will be required as well :D

Taking Draft Homebrew on the Road: Your Options Compared

A couple more options... If you don't mind PET bottles, the setup outlined in this video works really well, I use it all the time. No fussing with pressure adjustments! Nice heavy-duty, amber, PET "growlers" are available in various sizes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCrfp8ha9Dw When I want...
