is it supposed to look like that?

I have had a beer that did that right after pitching. What temps did you pitch at? The yeast may still be humping and stuff, checking out their new environment before getting something to eat. Give it a few days (weeks) and if it goes unchanged - THEN I might show a bit of concern :) I like...

    Overfermenting...?

Honestly, the longer primary rule can also hide alot of mistakes and/or off flavors that may would have been present given you bottled it 'on schedule'. I have a haus ale on tap right now that I botched horribly. I still tried following an 'earlier' schedule cause I was thirsty and was rewarded...

Just pulled the trigger on 3 lbs of hops

Mmmmmm, I went out and got the handy dandy food sealer last night as well. I was in hop heaven as I broke out my lbs into ozs. The sealer doesnt work when I make the bags too small, but it definitely did the trick! I still have a lb and a half to break out - LOOOOVE that smell :) -Me

New Brewer here: confused about - all of the above

Keep it simple for your first few batches. Take a risk and follow a recipe pieced together from here (as opposed to just buying a kit) and go from there. It will come in time that you start to understand the flavors that contribute to your beer(s). You can then begin to experiment from there. :)...

    Any UFC Fans Out there?

I agree on all points but consider this - In order to be the champ you have to BEAT the champ. Plain and simple. Shogun while putting on an impressive performance, did 'just enough' to win the fight. Unfortunately, that doesnt always cut it. Big Timmah was ousted from the UFC for having that...

    I really think I have a problem

See, my problem is I never have a steady pipeline. My pipeline is up the street at the Kroger, or something in the primary that I have been "saving bottles" for, or "just about to be kegged and aged" or bandaid flavored for a little while. I need to get a steady pipeline of ONE STYLE that I...

    I really think I have a problem

I know that I have said this before, but damn... If it wasnt reaffirmed once again today. I am really infatuated with beer, and brewing as well. Of course I have ranted about the different smells of brewday and how wonderous they are, and how I love my beer in so many fascets when I drink it...

    The n00b thread.

I rapidly deteriorate after my first batch into what is known as "beer pedophilia" My tendencies have since improved, now I appear to be more appropriately known as a "Beer Junkie" Sheesh... It never ends does it? -Me

    The n00b thread.

Damn it... Reading back on this Im kind of wishing I would have made the initial $6000 investment on a brewing setup. What was I thinking? :p

    2ndary ferm, degassing, infection?

Either way its still neato burrito! LOL I guess I am going to have to crash cool it (again) to get more of the sediments settled again. The degassing really got some stuff stirred up! Beer is neat. -Me

computer whizzes? come hear my problem! pc shutting itself off in safe mode.

Another thing you *may* want to try, is load up a Linux live distro CD. See if your computer will boot up with that. You should be able to traverse your file directory. Also - do a search for Hirens Boot CD Tools. This all in one CD has every tool imaginable to man that can help you diagnose...

What are some of the mistakes you made...where your beer still turned out great!

Thats what you call a Fly Sparge ;) I brewed a Haus Ale and overboiled it so I ended up with less beer than anticipated, pitched the yeast too hot (and stressed the hell out of them) RE pitched with some bread yeast and its all estery/bananna-y right now on tap. The estery smell and flavor is...

    Do homebrewers smoke?

I used to smoke 1-2 packs a day until I found Swedish snus. Since then, I occasionally will smoke a nasty cigarette or even a black and mild. I tend to smoke on occasion to remind myself as to why I quit in the first place. Snus is much more enjoyable IMO. (And I still get my nicotine!) -Me
