I've been looking for an excuse to start supporting.

    Primary Pale Liner (BeerInBag)

I had been thinking about this for a while and was glad to see someone here had done it. I just tried the uline liners on 3 different batches. I was already fermenting in plastic buckets due to the lower cost and easier cleanup. This was hopefully a way to make cleanup even easier and to open...

    Entrained gases needed for Secondary/Conditioning?

yea, just trying to vacuum transfer the beer. I'm going to experiment soon with just transferring water to make sure that nothing gets sucked into the vacuum line. IF CO2 gets reduced, I'm not concerned since the force carbonation will replenish that.

    Entrained gases needed for Secondary/Conditioning?

Ok, so I'm looking at using vacuum for transferring rather than pressurizing. That is not really part of the discussion here, but just for info. I seriously doubt that I will have a good enough seal to pull gases out of solution when transferring. My question is whether or not any entrained...

What's an accurate evaporation rate for the hour long boil?

I would agree with the arguments for a volumetric boil off rate related to the surface area of the water rather than a percentage of total volume. I also would think that environmental conditions would have an impact on that number too. A hot dry day would allow more water loss, versus a...

Keys to a good German Pils?

I would place proper fermentation and the right yeast selection above all else with a lager. Proper lagering temperatures and schedule. Also, a diacetyl rest close to the end of fermentation. I am still using Ice Mountain spring water for all my brews with only pH adjustments using phosphoric...

    The FerMonitor Lives

HBT member Elkoe looks to be working toward full integration. He started with uberfridge. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/my-latest-diy-project-uberfridge-temp-controller-web-interface-282605/ and located here: http://www.elcojacobs.com/uberfridge/ Now he's moved on to brewpi...

    Fall/Winter Beer Ideas???

I think I overdid it on the high ABV brews. All BIAB and in various stages of fermentation / aging / lagering). Trippel (attempted clone of New Belgium's, kegging next weekend) Bock Christmas Ale (combo of NB's Brickwarmer recipe, my own spice blend and 2# of corn sugar thrown in for good...

    Visiting Milwaukee, recommendation needed

Hey thanks for the suggestion! Off topic here, but does anyone know if any of the commercial breweries in the Milwaukee area sell their old kegs? I'd just be looking at future upgrades for brew days.

    Visiting Milwaukee, recommendation needed

I'll be in Milwaukee at the end of this week on business. I'll get in late on Wednesday, but Thursday evening, I'd like to stop by a local brewery or two. I'm not talking Miller or Pabst, but someone small. Leaving Friday. I'm staying downtown. Maybe fill up a growler or two to take home...

    Basic arduino questions.

If you read a lot about the UberFridge, what he did was have temperature measurement of the liquid and the air. He then wrote some logic into the PLC that did predictive control. Essentially working out the thermal response of each batch. He's got all sorts of graphs showing the validation of...

    Basic arduino questions.

Hey, I'm late to the conversation and without reading all of the posts, have you guys seen this: http://www.elcojacobs.com/uberfridge/ From the first post, this looks like exactly what you are trying to do and what I'm trying to get done in my spare time  It has been mentioned...

    low cost secondary

Did you try your regulator? I'm looking at alternatives for secondary regulators as well and I don't see why you couldn't use it for that. I'm about to order a standard air compressor regulator for my setup to see how it goes.

It got done, but it sure kept me busy. I did something I shouldn't have done and changed plans at the last minute. Recipes in the past called for steep grains in 5 gallons, but the new ones called for ~2 gallons. My change was steeping in one pot, while getting the boil water heated up in...

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

wow, great thread. I wish I had seen this before I ordered my 44 qt kettle. I could have ordered it with the basket for $30 more and didn't think I would need it. Separately it is about $75. I do have one that came with my 34 qt kettle. Do you guys think it would be big enough to use the 34...

    Oxygen absorption

Thanks for the link to that thread. I don't know why I didn't find it before. So I guess it answers my question. There still doesn't appear to be anyone who has done a legitimate test showing O2 absorption in to beer over time. What I get from that thread is that whatever amount of O2 that...

    Oxygen absorption

So to clarify my question, does anyone have any actual empirical data to show just how much beer gets oxygenated by sitting in a plastic bucket after the fermentation process is complete? If the lid is the biggest leak, then theoretically placing a layer of CO2 over the top of the beer would...

    Is my carboy big enough?

just as an update. I did use this carboy for a secondary on an extract Bock recipe and it was completely fine. I just used a standard double bubble airlock.

    DME boil time

Ok, so my current batch is a Red Ale http://www.greatfermentations.com/Red-Ale-Kit/productinfo/BKA009/. There was only one hop addition with 30 minutes to go. After adding all of the DME I was sitting there waiting for the first 30 minutes to pass and I got to wondering, is the first 30...
