    How to Brew Better IPAs

Really interesting stuff, bob. That would explain removal of harsher bitterness due to FWH, as you'd get a similar response as a 90 minute addition. All that said, understand - I never suggested that IPAs shouldn't be bitter. I personally prefer incarnations that are big on flavor and...

    How to Brew Better IPAs

I personally use flaked barley in almost everything (4 ounces is MAGIC for head formation/retention), but carapils does seem to help, too.

    How to Brew Better IPAs

I agree with this. If I'm doing anything where I want hop flavor, FWH is where it's at.

    How to Brew Better IPAs

I personally agree with most all of it save the yeast selection... I feel like chico is SO BORING. So, you don't care for FWH? Why not?

    How to Brew Better IPAs

Last week, a guy on reddit put together an outstanding guide to brewing better IPAs. The problem with reddit is that content - no matter how good - falls into the void and is lost. So I contacted him, and he was up for publishing it as a more permanent article. Here you go - I hope that...

Assembling a Truly International IPA recipe

I'm currently fermenting what I hope to be an IPA loaded with massive fruity aromas; it features ECY29 (Conan) yeast. This has been a fun process, and I've ended up with a truly international beer (six countries and at least four US states represented in the ingredient list). Full blog...

    Revisiting the Hydra wort Chiller

Last time out, this thing worked well, but I had major hose leak issues which resulted in poor water pressure. I promised to fix those and revisit the Hydra - here's the blog post about it. tl;dr - 6 gallons of wort at 67 degrees in under six minutes. Oh, yeah.

    Disaster, thy name is striplate

My trusty DIY stirplate decided to quit on me; I spent hours troubleshooting and fixing the stupid thing. If you care to laugh, here's the full tale.

How to Pasteurize Your Bottles for Sweet Carbonated Cider

Two weeks ago, a guy on reddit posted a great album to imgur on this very subject. It made the process so simple, and made so much sense, that it seemed a shame that the content would disappear into the bowels of reddit forever. So I contacted him, and he put together a revised version that...

Experimental Brewing with my sixteen year old

I can understand that. Caleb (the sixteen year old) did admit that the mash itself smells great. Well, duh!

My kids do enjoy the smells of brewing, so there is that.

Experimental Brewing with my sixteen year old

I grew up in a no booze home, as well. I was a "good" kid, though... I was nearly thirty before I felt comfortable having a single beer, as if I was doing something wrong. I let him sample every new beer I get. I think I've killed the forbidden thrill. I agree @ won't be sixteen long...

Experimental Brewing with my sixteen year old

Thanks! Also, War Eagle! But good luck in the playoff, anyway. If you guys make it, a team from this state would be there for the sixth straight year. Unheard of. Of course, ya'll will win it.

Experimental Brewing with my sixteen year old

Oh, I know where you were coming from. Thanks! Yeah, he does think that. I try to force him to spend time right now, looking forward to the days coming where he reverts to human form. All that said - I'll let him have a sip of each variety. I'm a HUGE believer that demystifying alcohol...

Experimental Brewing with my sixteen year old

They are pretty progressive. It's chemistry, it's biology, it's international... they loved the idea. Of course, they pointed out that he can't drink it, but they knew he would be supervised, so they were very much in favor of the concept.
