For those that like nice competition prizes...

The 2015 BrewUnited Challenge opens for entries in two days, and I'm beyond excited. Right now, we have almost $2500 worth of prizes from our sponsors! So, I wanted to show them off. Check out those prizes!

Thanks much! Also... it is a cool onesie. :)

Home Brewed Baby (#7) - also, I Plan a Special Beer

Okay, I admit it - I originally just wanted to share the news of our newest baby's birth, and show off the awesome onesie that my wife got for her. But then I started thinking about a commemorative beer, and before I knew it, I'd come up with a legit beer-related post. So, if you enjoy...

30 hop addiitons for a 30th birthday beer

I saw a guy post a couple of pics and a quick summary about this on reddit a week or two back, and thought it would make for a fun article, so I reached out to him. He didn't disappoint; I felt like it was well written, and he added several more pics (yay eye candy). So, here ya go -...

    Brew in 90 minutes - modified parti-gyle

Yeah, the title is a tad clickbait-y, as it's really more "brew an extra beer in 90 additional minutes"... but it works. I felt like this was a pretty decent article on the subject. I haven't done a partigyle myself, but the appeal of two beers from one brewday is strong. Full article...

    Post NHC blues...

Color me so jealous. I'm really hoping that I'll get to attend next year. This year, there was just no way - for one, we have a baby due any day now. :)

Traditional Lambic Using a Turbid Mash

Sours scare me a bit, I won't lie. But this guy did a really nice writeup, complete with a pretty great flow chart for the turbid mash steps... which appeals to the nerd in me. Seeing as how I seem to like to complicate things (decoction mashing, reducing runnings to syrup, etc), this is...

Announcing the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge - a different sort of competition

You may be right. It seems that every competition has some styles with tons of entries, and some with few; after all, how many roggenbiers get entered in a garden variety comp? We are discussing how much (if any) leniency judges should apply to styles that have decidedly "out of scope"...

Announcing the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge - a different sort of competition

We chose to limit the overall styles for a couple of reasons. One is simple logistics, making sure that we have enough judges, and setting some sort of workable constraints around the thing. We came up with these styles by voting. There was some push to go with a mere three styles per...

Announcing the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge - a different sort of competition

Hah, glad you think so. I may be in the same boat as you - I feel like all of the styles are doable. Our judge panel voted on styles, and these are the ones we settled with. As for IPAs... plenty of IPAs use a ton of Centennial. Two Hearted, anyone? Sure, you have to pair it with...

Announcing the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge - a different sort of competition

Yep, you are on the right track. Though for grains, you have to use all four ingredients to at least 1% of your grain bill. But yeah, something like that, mash low, you can get there. Hopefully, your integrity. I'm sure that we'll have a few cheaters... but by and large, I like to...

Announcing the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge - a different sort of competition

I totally get and respect that. Like I said, it's not for everybody! Thanks. I think that you "get it". I agree with you (re: just another comp); we wanted this to be something more unique. Thanks!

Announcing the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge - a different sort of competition

Yep. We never said that you can't change the malt. Full rules will come on or before we open the comp for entries, but check paragraph five of the announcement I linked. Again, this is about challenge. About getting out of your comfort zone to still make great beer with less than optimal...

Announcing the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge - a different sort of competition

Agreed, some are going to be tougher to do than others. For some, you'll likely need to toast/roast your own grains, use some interesting mash techniques, etc. Some categories will be easier than others, I don't deny that. The judges will be taking this into consideration, to a point - this...

Hah, zero responses. I would have expected *some* sort of posts. I'll blame NHC. :P

Announcing the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge - a different sort of competition

This has been stewing for a bit, and it's been killing me to keep quiet about it. Finally, it's time to share. I'm organizing a fairly unique, BJCP sanctioned, brewing competition this fall - the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge (link has full details). In a nutshell, this will be a sort of an...

I did an experiment on how fermentation temperature affected my beer...

I agree, yeast strain is huge. I totally allow for this in my post.
