Let's Get Competitive! Or, a Nine Hour Brewday

Basically, I've decided to put together a couple of competition beers on short notice. I got a very late start, and ended up with a long (very late) brewday. If you care to read, see the pictures... or, perhaps, point and laugh, the full post is here.

    Beer Bug

One thing that can sometimes work for rousing a Belgian yeast is to add a little simple sugar (i.e. table sugar). Wake them up with that, and they may keep eating.

    Preparing for a Competiiton

Matt Chrispen wrote an excellent, comprehensive article on how to prep for a competition. It is well worth the read.

The 2015 BrewUnited Challenge (with >$2900 of prizes) is open for registration!

Happy to help. If you think that you might want to enter, the wait list is a good idea, as it costs nothing to get on. Registration filled up pretty fast... we hit 103% of the capacity in 27 days. The overfill came from situations where people had registered, but paid for their entries...

The 2015 BrewUnited Challenge (with >$2900 of prizes) is open for registration!

Judging does not happen until October 25th. However, at this point, registration is full. I'm sure the fatc that we're now over $3800 worth of prizes doesn't hurt... We do have a wait list set up in case any entries become available - either because someone wants to back out, or we decide...

Brewing with kids - of course it's doable

I sense an utter derailment in the near future...

Brewing with kids - of course it's doable

All grain gives 'em more to do, but there's no reason that they can't help with extract!

Brewing with kids - of course it's doable

Cider is an easy gateway, no doubt. lol @ k1ngl1ves. I thought about including a throwaway "dry kidding" joke.

Brewing with kids - of course it's doable

Thanks. Yes, it does get better - though the time commitment for the kid just goes up. When they are infants, they just lay there (and sleep a lot). When they get mobile...

Brewing with kids - of course it's doable

Everybody knows I have kids (see my username), and I'm often asked questions along the time of "how do you find time to brew"? The tl;dr of this post is simply me talking about how I make it all work. Brewing with Kids.

There are less than 100 slots still available in the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge!

Just a heads up, folks. A little more than a week into registration, we have more than 200 beers entered, and have room for less than 100 more. If you are interested in entering (you know, you'd like a shot at the nearly $3200 in prizes that we have), please note that while we won't be...

Brew in a Bag in a Cooler - I review the Brew Bag

I admit it. I have never cared for BIAB, largely because I must suck at it. I make a mess, I have issues with temp control, and so on. Recently, Rex from The Brew Bag contacted me to become a sponsor for the 2015 BrewUnited Challenge, then talked me into trying one of his cooler bags as a...

    I wrote a boiloff/dilution calculator...

Glad you've found it to be useful.

    I wrote a boiloff/dilution calculator...

Sure, it's nothing revolutionary, but I'm proud of it. This one will calculate your gravity after dilution or boiloff, your gravity after blending beers, or the volume you need to achieve a desired target gravity. Boiloff/Dilution Calculator

    HomebrewDad.com is officially dark.

Okay, so that's a bit of a teaser title. :) But HomebrewDad.com is down for good - BrewUnited.com has fully taken its place. All of the old links (the various calculators and such) are still up, they simply forward silently to the new domain. I did do a blog post with the rationale...

The 2015 BrewUnited Challenge (with >$2900 of prizes) is open for registration!

A mere 22 hours into the registration process, we have already exceeded 100 beers entered into the comp. Folks, that's a third of our planned entry cap! I'm sure that the crazy prizes have something to do with this, but I like to think that the challenge is a big factor, too.

The 2015 BrewUnited Challenge (with >$2900 of prizes) is open for registration!

So... a few hours in, we are already right at 25% of the entry cap. The response has been fun!

The 2015 BrewUnited Challenge (with >$2900 of prizes) is open for registration!

I am so, so, so stoked about this. We are officially open for registration, folks! If you are interested in a slightly different kind of competition, one that asks you to go above and beyond in less than ideal circumstances to still make great beer... this is the competition for you. And...

For those that like nice competition prizes...

Heh. We added $200 more in prizes already today - including a "Build Your Own" jockey box from Keg Connection. :D
