A few questions before I start my 1st brew...

Good suggestions, yet, my biggest problem is I already have too many expensive hobbies already. But, so be it, she is the one who bought me the kit, tough cookies I say...:mug:

A few questions before I start my 1st brew...

Checked SG this morning...1.024, recipe called for a FG of 1.019-1.023, I'm in the ball park. I'm tempted to rack but I'm going to try and be patient for another week...

    2nd batch, Traditional Bock...

No, still looking for a chest freezer to get temps down lower than my basement stays. Why the LHBS owner changed the yeast to allow a higher temp. Technically, I guess its more of an ale than a lager. I'm on a daily search for a reasonable chest freezer so I can put together a true lager...

    2nd batch, Traditional Bock...

Fermentation is started, keeping this batch ~60F as advied by my LHBS owner...

    2nd batch, Traditional Bock...

Finished up my second batch today, brewing a traditional bock recipe from my LHBS (Bull City Homebrew), it reads: 1 lb LME Ilsen Light (Briess) 6lb, 6oz LME Munich (Briess) 8 oz Caramuch III (Wyermann) 8 oz Caraaroma (Wyermann) 8 oz Melanoidin (Wyermann) 1 oz Nugget hops (60 min boil) 1...

A few questions before I start my 1st brew...

Gravity check this morning: 1.030 @ 65F Taste test: good, nothing noted to give me concern Appearance: still very cloudy No bubbling through the valve Still, its clearly far from being done. More patience dictated...

A few questions before I start my 1st brew...

Update...looks like its finishing the fermentation process. Bubbling has decreased to near nothing, no "action" in the carboy. I'll take a gravity reading in the morning to see how close it is to the FG predicted by the recipe instructions. I'll check it for at least 3 days to see how stable...

NC brewers, Where do you buy grain?

I'm in Cary also. Yes, both American and Bull City are good. I've only used American for CO2 fill ups before I started homebrewing. Now, I'm using Bull City, easier for me to get to, buying his "discount t-shirt" yields a 10% discount and I like supporting the LHBS as much as I can...

1 brew in and going to all grain...suggestions?

I'm in the same boat. I picked up my 3rd keg today to convert to keggles, already made the immersion cooler to chill the wort, and I'm starting to work on my plans for a piece of brewing scuplture. I don't have a recipe, and being a noob, don't have much to offer but to suggest to read, read...

A few questions before I start my 1st brew...

Thanks again for all the guidance and advice. I know that buckets are the smart way to go, something about glass though. I'll probably split the difference and get one carboy and two buckets. About bottles, we had recycling come the week before my birthday (the kit was a b-day gift from the...

A few questions before I start my 1st brew...

Yeah, its not one of my strong attributes, patience... Great suggestion guys, I just may do that tomorrow. The wife did get me the "deluxe" kit that came with a 5g carboy and a 6.5g bucket (a b-day present). I'm very tempted to get 2 more carboys so I could have 3 batches going at a time...

A few questions before I start my 1st brew...

Happy to see the beginnings of the krausen layer and bubbles out of the valve, wort temp stable at 65 in a swamp cooler with a fish tank heater in it. Huge relief and a some satisfaction that, thus far, things are going as planned...

A few questions before I start my 1st brew...

Today was brew day. Followed the directions in the kit with modifications as advised above. All went as expected, my home made IC did its job and its sitting in the basement, waiting for the yeast mosh pit to get started. I took a SG reading and it fell right in the middle of the...

A few questions before I start my 1st brew...

Yes sir, you have helped a great deal...:mug: That's right, I read that ratio for water to grain and forgotten it already. Thank for the info and welcome...:mug:

A few questions before I start my 1st brew...

Great forum, introduced myself after receiving a kit from the wife and kids for my b-day (I'm a Christmas eve baby). I've found a lot of answers to my initial questions but want a bit of clarification before I start. For reference, I'm using True Brew "Whitely Series Double IPA" which...

Another noob, got my 1st kit today...

Thanks for the suggestions and welcome. Part of the "gift" was a discount shirt from Bull City Homebrew. I've been down to American Brewmaster (to fill my CO2 tank I use when off-roading) but not stepped into the Bull City store. My wife works in RTP, I can only assume it was close to her...

Another noob, got my 1st kit today...

My wife and daughters gave me my first homebrew kit today for my birthday. Been thinking about doing this for many years, the family gave me the kick in the rear to get going. Lots of reading to do, lots of studying to do, more reading and I hope to get things going later this week...
