    Pulley system for BIAB

I set an oven rack on top of my pot. Then a bucket with holes drilled into the bottom on top of that. Then the bag of grain goes inside the bucket.

What is this for? What is it called?

If you're really paranoid you can use an in-line filter http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?products_id=2289 But I'd say there's a 99% chance you're not going to infect your brew from blowing gently on it for 4 seconds.

    Why doesn't everyone just BIAB?

Just to give a different perspective... From my understanding BIAB was conceived here in Australia after home brewers first became aware of the Braumeister. They wanted a cheaper alternative of mashing in a similar fashion. A lot of the older brewers I've met here still prefer the traditional 3v...

What is this for? What is it called?

carboy cap...you can use it instead of a stopper to hold an airlock in place. You can also put a racking cane down the middle and start a siphon easily by blowing on the longer end.

My closest LHBS is charging $8.95 for Wyeast

Even with higher ingredients costs its way cheaper to homebrew when decent commercial beer goes for $20 a six pack and $100-120 for a case of 24.

What movie do you quote most?

"Back off man, I'm a scientist" As a scientist, I try to use that as often as possible.

Why do brewers buy Chico yeast?

Everything is relative. We just started getting Sierra Nevada out here in Australia. It's $21 a six pack. Torpedo is $28/sixer.

Switch to 3 vessel from biab?

I don't brew 10 gallon batches and if I did I'd probably have to get a pulley system or a winch. But for 5 gal batches I do now, I simply pull the bag out, put a rack from my oven on top of the vessel, then put a plastic bucket with holes drilled in the bottom on top of that. Then the bag of...

    Measuring Beer in Kegs

I'm not going to search for it so you'll have to google for yourself. But I remember reading an article about this guy who use an arduino to twitter to status of his keg volume. I think he used a commercial kegerator, and a normal 15gal sanke keg. If I remember correctly, he had weight sensors...

    Easy to store brew rig?

I don't have a picture of mine handy, so here's a stock photo. BIAB FTW!

Taking the plunge. Open Fermentation. Yes I'm willing to dump a batch.

I either use sanitized foil on top of my containers (like for a yeast starter) or drilled silicone bungs with a flap that covers the holes. Works well, although I have noticed dead fruit flies floating in a couple of batches, which could lead to infection under the right circumstances.

    Starter vs. no starter

I find it funny that after all this debate, petey_c is making a starter on his new stir plate...with dry yeast. Pete, I'm glad you're making starters (I'm in that camp), but they're unnecessary for dry yeast. You want to proof dry yeast in water. You only make starters for liquid yeast.
