Upgrading kettle. Time to abandon BIAB?

Thanks to the help of some of the people here I got my BIAB going and I use a 8 gallon kettle and was able to get a 1.074 beer with a sparge. No extract used. Looking at my setup I see no reason I couldn't go bigger. Of course there will be limits and I would have no problem adding some DME to...

    How fast can you brew?

For the winter I started doing BIAB. Now my brew day isn't always shorter but with having 2 kids I can do brews around their time. Today I set everything up then took my son to preschool. Came home had my other son (21 months old) help me heat water and get the mash going. While mashing...

What was your Gatewaybeer to craft beer?

Oddly my gateway beer was Tyskie. It's not a craft beer but it was the first beer I had besides a BMC. And I thought wow this is pretty good and from there I went nuts. I try pretty much anything I see even if it's not my favorite style.

    Homemade better than store bought?

My sister only brews GF beers. A couple she made at first had a slight tang to it. After a while they started turning out pretty good. Good enough that some people never knew they were GF beers. I've had quite a few GF beers and would say hers are at least as good if not better than some.

    Dry hopping question & poll

Same as most- drop them into the fermenter, primary or secondary, let sit for the desired time cold crash (sometimes) then bottle or keg. I don't dry hop in the keg but if I did then I would use something to contain them.

    Why 5 Gallon Kits??

Once you learn your system it should be fairly easy to adjust your recipe to achieve your desired outcome. Especially if you try the same recipe a few times. Just make the necessary adjustments and try brewing it again. May want to try using some of the softwares out there to try and help you out.

    best dry hops

The summit is more grapefruity than the citra which lends a welcome bitterness to it. The citra is smooth tasting on the lines of an apricot or sweet orange or maybe a non tart grapefruit if that makes sense. The summit puts a bit of punch to it. Gives the flavor a bit more backbone.

    best dry hops

When I use the summit I don't go overboard. It is a strong hop and a little bit goes a long way. That is the same with the citra. Along side each other the summit lends a bittering note to the freshness of the citra. I would think more of a grapefruity kind of flavor. The aroma of the two...

    best dry hops

I've been using summit and citra together and get tons of compliments. It's actually the wife's favorite beer.

    Cold crashing and dry hopping

If possible I try and do everything in the primary. I usually toss the hops in let it sit for 5-7 days then cold crash til I get around to bottling or kegging it. I used to use gelatin but it seems just letting it sit a bit longer works as good.

Brewers Best American Pale Ale - please share your experience with it ~

That was my first beer that I brewed. I thought it came out pretty good, but nothing over the top. With that being said I'm sure it is a way better beer than how mine turned out. Maybe one day I'll brew it again just to see how it would turn out now.

    Stove top/Electric BIAB

Well I ended up getting a 1000W bucket heater for my BIAB set-up. It actually worked out surprisingly well. I put 5 gallons of 60F water in my kettle and when I came back 25 minutes later it was at 178. Over shot my strike temp but I really didn't think it would come up that fast. So I...

Why bubbles in airlock, but not blowoff tube?

See in your last post you are using a bucket. I noticed a few of my buckets leak around the seal where the lid meets the bucket. That is common as I have read many posts about that. Two of my buckets leak enough that I wont see any activity in the airlock let alone a blow-off tube. Instead...

Why bubbles in airlock, but not blowoff tube?

With your blow-off tube it may not have a perfect seal so the CO2 is escaping somewhere else. Or possibly you may have a hole in your blow off tube. Not to worry if you put the air lock and seen bubbles then obviously you have activity. Another thing you can do is put less solution in your...

Feel silly asking - when kicking a keg do you clean immediately?

I usually don't clean them until i am cleaning some other brewery equipment(fermenters and such). I don't store them cold, and bleed the pressure off right before i clean it. Never had an issue with cleaning them.

Why do large (10+ gallon) batches?

I have a herms system and make 10 gallon batches on it. The only bad thing is its in my garage which is far from my house and i have to run a hose for water for cleaning. So i put together a BIAB that i can do on my stove top in the winter which is only 5 gallons. I like doing the bigger...
