    Green/Astringent/Alcohol taste (hard to pinpoint)

Hey homebrewers- Need some help. My last two batches - APA extract w/ steeped grains, WLP001; bottled & Hefe extract w/steeped grain, WLP320; fermenting - both came out green/astringent/acohol tasting it tastes somewhat malty as well (kind of difficult to pinpoint) I've read through Palmer...

    Building a kegerator!!

Great build Boomer. Suhweet setup!! Regarding the odor in your fridge you can try baking soda as suggested in one of the replies, but I have also heard of using charcoal to get rid of foul odors. If your SWMBO has some old stockings or an old nylon steeping bag, I'd drop 3-4 charcoal briquettes...

    stick on thermometers

I tried using an aquarium stick on thermometer from Petco but found the temp range to be too limited. Funny thing is that a fermometer will cost you less than that aquarium therm strip from Petsmart and has a temp range for lagers and ales.

    Best method for steeping grains

+1 on tannin release with temps in excess of 165-170F. Palmer speaks of this in his book

Gremlyn, thanks for the advise. Would I put the starter in the fridge eventhough there is still a nice kreuzen?

    Yeast Starter for WLP320

Hey homebrewers- Got some questions; need some advice. Here are the details: I did my first starter on Monday night for an Am. Hefe I'll be brewing on Friday - a 1L:100g of DME mix. I aerated the hell out of it and pitched the WLP320. As of yesterday afternoon I had really good kreuzen -...

priming sugar qty in 12oz vs. 22oz. bottles

Hey homebrewers- Does the amount of priming sugar used (5oz) change when bottling in 12 oz bottles versus 22oz bottles? A LHBS advised me that 'due to the physics' of the 22oz. bottles less priming sugar would be needed to achieve the same level of carbonation. I find this odd.

    When/How to do a Blowoff?

+1 on tubing into the airlock. But I'd save the cheap vodka for guests I'm not paricularly fond of :) and would just put the other end of the tube in a jug with iodophor/water solution. Cheaper than having to use vodka IMO.

    Couple Questions on Bottling

Plastic bottling is good in a pinch, but I'm a traditionalist and enjoy the effect and process of bottling in beer bottles. Of course there is no better excuse to drink beer than to say you are collecting empty bottles - as if anyone needs an excuse! :mug: Another option is to visit your...

raising temp on beer cause ferment. to restart?

I experienced a similar problem a week ago with an APA I brewed and pitched with WLP001 (California Ale) OG 1.051. I had it in my boiler room where the temperature this time of year is a pretty consistent 68-69F. I had great initial fermentation and then peter'd out after 48hrs. I brought a...

Porter recipe calculated thru Tasty Brew

Hey homebrewers- I am preparing to brew a variation of Palmer’s robust porter (extract with steeped grains). The difference is that I’ll be brewing a full boil versus his partial. I have utilized the Tasty Brew recipe calculator to tweak the amounts of the grain and hops bill for the full...

    Delabeling

Other good bottles to use are Sierra Nevada and Saporro bottles. Labels come off easily with just a 3-4hour water soak in initially warm water. Adding oxiclean or similar substitute even makes it easier.

    Coiling soft copper

+10 on the sakrete form tubes. They are great, inexpensive (about $7 at the Depot) and come in different diameters (6, 8, 10, 12in) to fit your kettle. Another little tidbit, drill a little hole in the tube to hold an end of the coil and secure it with duck tape - this is great if you don't have...
