Can You Brew It recipe for Deschutes Obsidian Stout

Brewed this today, woo hoo! I hit all my numbers spot on. Mashed at 150, ended up with SG of 1.072 for about 66.7% efficiency. I'm pretty excited about it. It's in my fridge now and I'm starting fermentation temp at 65 as Jamil stated, although that seems a little low for 002. I'll watch it...

Rock Hill / Ft. Mill Homebrewers

I'm still thinking about this. If we can get 5-10 people to start with, that would be great. I know that the AHA will help set up a club as well.

TJ, I like your HERMS coil. That's what I'm about to do as well. Did you get that through stainlessbrewing? How many feet is that coil? Nice stuff!

Do American's have an imature beer taste palate?

The whole premise of the question is wrong. It already assumes that European beer is superior to American beer. We have some of the best beers in the world here in the US. And I would say, a lot bigger selection of beers with unique profiles.

WLP007 Banana Aroma and Fermentation Question

reinstone, thanks for the advice! I still have 2-3 weeks before I would really start on it anyway so maybe it will subside. I just want to try and figure out what happened so it won't happen again. I'll post after a couple of weeks and hopefully I'll report back that it did go away!:mug:

WLP007 Banana Aroma and Fermentation Question

I did a 2.5 liter starter for a SG of 1.072. This was supposed to give me ~280B cells. I used a gallon jug with intermittent shaking, for about 36 hours, then refridgerated for a day, then took it out about 3-4 hours before I pitched it. The yeast was bought at a fairly new HBS and they...

WLP007 Banana Aroma and Fermentation Question

I just kegged my second batch of the CYBI Arrogant Bastard Clone (90% 2-Row, 10% Special B). The first batch turned out really well and scored a 38 in competition. No problems with that batch. The second batch has been in the keg for a week. I pulled a bit off last night just to see how it's...

    Fermentation Warmer Advice Needed

That might work but you may find it won't quite get to 80 (and stay) especially if the temperature drops at night. I use one of these, http://www.walmart.com/ip/Lasko-Products-My-Heat-Personal-Heater/16503222, in my 'fridge hooked up to a temperature controller. It gets the temp up there plus...

    Making a copper manifold

I've never has a stuck sparge and if you vourlauf correctly, you won't have any grains escape either. My beers are always very clear. I used a stainless steel braid for a couple of batches and had a lousy time with it. I built this and haven't had any problems since. It's easy to take apart...

OK, thank you Afrobyte:drunk: After reading what you wrote, I started looking into water...BIG MISTEAK;) It's all I've been raeding for the past 3 days. I've listened to the whole "waterganza" thing on Jamils podcast and now am looking at spreadsheets and everything else! I know this is...

    Arrogant Bastard Clone Options

PoorYorick, Hammy71's recipe in post #10 is the recipe that Jamil Z and Tasty talk about on Can You Brew it. I've made it twice now and both times the beer is fantastic but the hops are not quite there for me. It could be my water and I'm looking into that now. But the recipe is spot on. I...

Experienced brewer : what have changed the way you brew?

For me in this order: 1. Fermentation Control - Without a doubt, the single most important thing you can do to improve your beer. 2. Full Boil 3. Yeast Starters Next on my list is Water. I'm currently studying up on how to manipulate and improve water based on the style I'm brewing. I also...

    Fermentation Chamber Heater Needed?

You'll need a heater. Especially if you want to ferment any Belguim-Type beers and you want to ramp up the temperature to 75 or so. Even when I do an ale i like to start out on the low side of fermentation temps and then towards the end bump it up to ~70. This time of the year you have to...

Any experience with US Solar Pumps? Only $50.

I was looking at these YESTERDAY and they were $61. Now they're $75??? They started out around $50. How can you have a $14 increase in 24 hours? Looks like someone wants to capitalize on demand from us brewers. I thought at $50-60, these were a pretty good alternative to the more expensive...
