    Bottle Bombs

So, I bottled a Tripel the other night. Prior to bottling I prepared a corn syrup solution using the tastybrew calculator. I made a mistake of not entering in the fermentation temp to determine residual CO2 levels. Unfortunately, this mistake causes the calculator to assume that that number...

My first yeast slant, why does it have so low viscosity?

Has anyone had issues with their slants lifting from the bottom during incubation periods? If so, could such a phenomenon be avoided by adding more agar agar to the solution?

    Wyeast Irish Ale 1084

That does make sense. I usually stay in the range of 68 degrees, but that was an abnormally hot week. I guess the good news is that I can keep the strain. I will just make certain to keep my fermenters in a bath to regulate temperature from here on out. Thanks everyone.

    Wyeast Irish Ale 1084

Now that I think about it, I believe it fermented at around 72*F. Maybe slightly higher. It was a hot week.

    Wyeast Irish Ale 1084

I have used this yeast for two batches of an Oatmeal Stout. The first batch had yeast pitched from a starter made using yeast from the smackpack. My most recent batch had yeast pitched from a starter that was composed of washed yeast from the previous batch. I am noticing an off-flavor...

    First Contaminated batch...

It probably did occur when you opened the bucket. One week is ample time for that amount of growth, especially when oxygen is introduced to the headspace. Things to consider as contamination sources: hair, breathing, air circulation... The apples could definitely be a source, too. This...

Witbier Blue Balls Belgian Wit (Blue Moon Clone)

I brewed this and kegged it and, I have to say that is seems a little skunky. The color and head resemble the pic posted and my gravities were almost spot on. I am attributing it to the WL400. Anyone else experience this with this yeast? I should also point out that it is a few days shy of...

    Too much coriander

I recently made a comparable wit using the same yeast and only about 0.35 oz of coriander. The beer is only 5.5 weeks old, but is tasting a bit skunky. Does this a beer using this yeast usually take a bit of time to mature? Didn't want to derail the thread, so I will point out that the...

    Slanting yeast

Would I be correct in assuming that the pressure cooker provides a means of sterilizing both the media and vials? I am thinking about boiling the media and funneling it into the vials. Then I'll put the filled and partially capped vials into a beaker that will be placed into a boiling...

Bar;ey Crusher! Barley Crusher! Barley Crusher!

I was so bummed out when I ordered my BC from Austin Howebrew, because it seemed that I would be waiting forever to get it. I guess I got lucky, however, since I received it within 6 days of my order. Maybe the dudes at BC are cranking them out quicker now.

    Efficiency 30.87%!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't the mash temp seem a bit high, too?

    Cant reach my final OG

Could it have something to do with attenuation? Do you aerate or use starters? Perhaps you're pitching at too high a temp or fermenting at the wrong temp.

    Helles Bock 35th Birthday Maibock

Would secondary fermentation be viable in a keg? I haven't lagered before, so I don't know how yeast growth works during the cold fermentation stage.

Bar;ey Crusher! Barley Crusher! Barley Crusher!

I ordered a BC today. Though, from the looks of some of these posts, I may not be getting it for a while. In any case, I plan on hitting up Rochester Mills to see if they will sell me a bag of 2-Row. However, I would also be interested in splitting some bags of specialties. Hit me up if...

    Abandon Keg?

So I got home, made an Iodophor solution and started my dissection. I removed the dip tube and confirmed that the post will thread down snugly. After this discovery I cleaned the dip tube and set it back into the keg. It sits upon the post with the only displacement being from the o-ring...

    Abandon Keg?

Thanks for the responses. I do know that the post will sit lower. My main concern is removing the dip tube while the keg is full. It would be a drag to lose a batch to an infection after getting it this far, especially considering that I would also have to reset the dip tube. I will...

    Abandon Keg?

The gas post is fully seated. Think I should reset the stem?

    Abandon Keg?

I kegged for the first time tonight. Went nuts with sanitizing, replaced all o-rings, etc. I pressurized the keg and went to put it in the fridge. This is when I noticed that the "out" peg wasn't screwed on all of the way. I pulled out my wrench and began to screw it on further, but it...
