Noob questions - Delabeling, no chill wort, etc

A few questions if you don't mind answering! I checked with the FAQ as well as a bit of searching here, but the search engine isn't the best (most forums tend to be this way from what I've seen). 1. What's the best way to take labels off old bottles? I've soaked 12 Samuel Adams bottles in hot...

    Old ''mud'' in new wort?

Haha, alright I guess I'll chuck it then. That IS the stuff they were referring to (to add to a new batch of unfermented wort later on). Thanks :mug:

wort chillers as waste of water??

As someone mentioned, get a secondary 5 gal pail, a cheap liquid pump (pet stores have them in the fish section), and a bunch of ice... Recirculation system. If you don't wanna waste water/ice, use water frozen in gatorade bottles (or something of the likes) for ice cubes. You're always...

    Old ''mud'' in new wort?

Thanks for the post! And on that note, what can happen if you do transfer that sediment? ... It's something I forgot to do with my blond ale. However fermentation started within 24 hours at a healthy pace, and I transfered to a secondary fermenter within 7 days where all that sediment was...

    Old ''mud'' in new wort?

Thanks for quick replies! To clarify (which sounds like it wont make a difference lol), they suggested pitching the trub directly after you cool the boiled wort? Maybe thats the yeasting you were referring to? Not sure... I saved my trub in a sanitized ziplock, but if it has to do with...

    Old ''mud'' in new wort?

I was talking to a few friends of mine who are anything but veterans in the home brewing scene... And they were telling me how using ''mud'' from a primary fermentation (the gunk left on the side of the fermenter) can be used for flavor if you add it to a batch later on? Sounds weird to me...

To What Extent Are Plastic Buckets Impervious To Light?

Wrap 'er in towels if you're afraid of your wort becoming light stricken. Thats what I do... I have plastic pails for primary and plastic 5 gal water bottles for secondarys. I always wrap a dark colored bath towel around it and I've never had a problem. My place gets a lot of sunlight too...

    Overactive Yeast

Oh well thats no problem for me.. My fermentation is going very well still. I have two batches going, both of which needed a blow off tube application (the other is a blond ale). But even after it was calm enough to go to a regular air lock, fermentation was/is going great. My only concern is...

    Overactive Yeast

Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah, sorry about bringing it back from the dead... I moderate a Volkswagen forum and for some reason, the community encourage such things so it's kind of habbit, but good to know for future reference. As for the question of topic, glad to hear that it wont hurt...

    Overactive Yeast

My krausen IS flowing out (because I'm a noob and used a 5 gallon carboy for a 5 gallon batch on primary fermentation) and I'm wondering... How bad is that? Because I've been told that you want the krausen to ''reciruculate'' through the fermentation cycle instead of basically having it dump...
