    Cold crash

I learned that in homebrewing there are many ways to do things and just because someone says they do it or they don't do it means very little in a small context. Best is to try to read a lot of ways and average the results you get. Having said that, I agree that cold crash is more useful when...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

I have done 63 brews with this system and really love it. I added the Amazon pump by brew thirty something. Works perfect. Just be sure to clean it with PBW right away. Otherwise it can get stuck with the sticky sugary wort residue. I bet it can happen too with the M&B one.

    Aeration With O2

I boil my clean wand stone 5 min every time before I use it. That will kill everything I hope.

How many of you use a yeast starter?

On 63 brews I have never used a starter. But all my brews are below 8% ABV. Mostly use dry yeast for convenience but also liquid if the recipe requires it. Having said that, I can see the benefit like to be sure it is fine if you reuse yeast and/or maybe use post-use date yeast. I always say...

Mashing dark grains and Crystal Malts - issues?

I see that. I guess not as common as the "do not do secondary" topic for example that you see every week and not every other month. Too many ways to brew good beer. I guess this is just another variation.

Mashing dark grains and Crystal Malts - issues?

Where you got this info? Never heard of it in two+ years here. As others said. Mash all together.

Will this cause the wort (after mash but before boil) to be oxidized or any other problems?

Better to use the math from middle school to calculate. Avoid transfers.

    Wort chiller/ plate chiller woes.

Your chiller may be too small and your water is definitely too hot. Also, I don't understand why your water is coming so warm living up north. But bottom line is as suggested you will need to find a source of colder water to pass through it. Also as mentioned make sure the hoses are connected...

    How to Filter my Brew

When I started I started to worry about these crazy things of filtering and what not. Researching filters blah blah blah. Glad I never got into it. Best filter is time and even better cold crash before transferring if you can. Add finnings on top and you get the perfect one.

Question on ABV boost for recipe and OG/FG

Can you detect the difference between 5.64% and 6%?

    No yeast action

No water. Wait at least 32hrs+. Then worry.

    wyeast liquid yeast questions

I bet you will be more than fine. What I don’t like about it is that the internal yeast nutrition package is very hard to break. I just pitched one on a pilsner this weekend and it started in just 4hrs. Expiration was Jan 2021. No starter.

Considering an Anvil Foundry Brewing System

I go through a 5gal keg in 2 weeks unless it is a high ABV Stout. I have done 62 brews since I started 2 years ago and none has come out bad. You could do the same. A 5gal keg with few friends could go very quickly. Like in a day.

Considering an Anvil Foundry Brewing System

In the 6.5 you will be able to brew a lot of beers up to around 15lbs of grain if you are comfortable or about 7% abv. If you like big beers then get the bigger one. I have my Mash & Boil which is similar on a 19” custom table. I use a step to lift the basket. These systems are great and very...

Worried this may be infected. Any advice?

I remember when I started two yrs ago I was always paranoid about infections. As you go you will get experience of what is normal. There are a lot of weird things with yeast that are normal. This is one. Good luck!

Any special considerations brewing with Pilsner malt?

Got OG 1.059. Wort taste good. Great brew day :-)

Any special considerations brewing with Pilsner malt?

Currently brewing. PH came out at 5.33 so I guess the acid malt did it’s job.

Any special considerations brewing with Pilsner malt?

I'm using Weyermann malt. Planning to boil 75 minutes. Bought some acidulated malt to bring PH down (adding 3oz). Right now only planning to add 1.8G of calcium chloride to mash water (4.4g RO). Brun Water estimated PH 5.41.

Any special considerations brewing with Pilsner malt?

I usually end up with more water than needed so most of the time I need to boil off before adding the 60min hops to get to my final volume to transfer. So I guess I should be fine. Thanks all. Now I'll search for water as the Pilsen profile in Burn Water seems impossible for me to achieve.
