The Case of the Crappy Caps

I thought about that after reading about it in another thread. There was nothing on the bag to indicate that, and they were the only caps on the shelf (except for the non-oxygen absorbers which were also Silver in color). I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask them if somehow they stock Euro caps. Of...

The Case of the Crappy Caps

Just wondering if anyone has come across this. I have bought my caps from various online sources and have had no problems. Generally I buy oxygen absorbing caps, and from the vendors I have used, they are generally gold colored caps. Over the holiday I ran out of caps and had to bottle a...

    Spiced Winter Ale

Finally got around to bottling this guy after a rather longer secondary than I had planned. MOST of the bad flavors had mellowed out if not COMPLETELY disappeared. Not quite the blend of spices (ginger and orange predominating over cinnamon and clove) I was hoping for but still drinkable based...

    Homebrewtalk Carboy Cleaner Giveaway

I heard that once upon a time, Sarah Palin had a dirty carboy. Someone pointed out these Carboy Cleaner thingies, and she started shouting: "DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!!"

    Man, I love Apfelwein

To some of us, it is already good right out of the hydrometer tube :drunk:

    Man, I love Apfelwein

That's interesting! I opened up an almost 2 year old bottle of Apfelwein over Thanksgiving and it wasn't very good :( Had a little phenolic/band aid flavor developing. Maybe a little oxidized? Never got that before, though I think the oldest Apfelwein I have tried was only 1 year old. I think I...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I've used DAP in the last couple of batches when my FERMAX got wet and stinky. Didn't notice any off flavors...but in one case I probably didn't use ENOUGH DAP as there were still rhino farts.

    Spiced Winter Ale

Thanks for the info. Wish I had read the Molasses warnings. It was 'unsulphured' molasses, though. Tasting a flat hydro sample is often not the BEST indication of how the beer will turn out, but usually if THAT tastes good, the beer is great :) The putrid smell/taste (not really sulfur though...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Good practice is to measure Final Gravity BEFORE the addition of Priming sugar. You should be fine, though. I have had Apfelwein finish anywhere between 0.996 and 1.003 (before addition of sugar). Usually it is 1.00 or less, but I think these are all safe ranges. 3/4 cup priming sugar should...

    Removing labels from beer bottles.

Having a heck of time with some Brooklyn Oktoberfest labels. Soaked in hot water/Oxyclean. Other labels came off fine..but the Brooklyn are still resistant. Might have to try boiling them. I rinse several times with water to get rid of any Oxyclean residue. Sometimes I do an additional...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Please do report back! I have used mainly Montrachet and EC-1118. I have an old pack of Windsor (probably expired, but maybe still active) which I keep meaning to use for beer but always seem to pick a different yeast. If I can pitch it in some Afpelwein, it will go to good use! The statements...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I did that with my first few batches. Carbed most of it, but made 2 or 3 wine bottles still. Gave them away/drank them pretty quickly. Don't think they bottle aged for more than a month or two and were fine. I prefer carbonation, so I haven't bottled much still. Note the recent post where...

    Homebrewtalk Carboy Cleaner Giveaway

A Carboy cleaner would be a great time saver compared to multiple rinses to remove any Oxymagic residue in my carboys after the Oxy does its thing. Plus, I think it would be a blast kicking back with a homebrew and watching the spinning rag.

    Man, I love Apfelwein

OK.. check the label on the concentrate. A good priming rate is 1 oz (by weight) sugar per gallon of Apfelwein. So, if your concentrate is something like 28 g sugar/2 oz, then a 12 oz can of concentrate should be good to prime 6 gallons. I generally like to prime a touch higher, so I would...

New bad lot of Nottingham yeast ???

Heh a little bit of thread resurrection :) I pitched 11 g of Notty Lot 108117102 with expiration date of 5/2011 and got no activity in 48 hr. I mean NOTHING. No apparent multiplying Yeast in solution. Wort was crystal clear, and, of course no airlock activity. Interestingly, I had two other...
