Can’t keep this dog out of the barley - Pre or post mash

    Dogs

:mug: I lost two old-timers last year - 3 weeks apart. Both died peacefully at home. Sucks. Was thankful did not have to put them down. Don't know if I could have done it.

    Been Gone A While...

I was off for twenty years - a bunch of life, there! The last brew day was the day my wife found out she was pregnant with our now twenty daughter ;). I definitely had to start all over with brewing equipment. Anyway, throwing in 2 cents on getting set up cheaply - I went with BIAB. Of course...

I get the new ones from Adventures in Homebrewing and have had good luck. The used ones I’ve gotten in the past were leakers pretty quickly [emoji2371]

Just another follow-up. CPT of the first cold-crash with the TC-100 and chiller. All looks and tastes great - it’s pretty well carbonated already even though that wasn’t really my intention but I kept a corny keg attached to keep a little pressure on during cold crash. Then just left it there...

Here's the follow-up on my first cold crash with the TC100, Penguin 1/3 HP chiller at 28F, CF5, 4.9g of 6.4% ABV beer, ambient indoor temp of 70F: As posted earlier, was stuck at 40F. Did switch the glycol hoses in/and out as per TC-100 instructions on temperature inversion and did try raising...

Done. Apparently you I shop at the same moving blanket store - LOL That is my trusty BIAB moving blanket

Doing my first attempt at cold crash right now. Can't seem to get past 40F. Here is the setup CF5. Spike TC-100 (with the heater but obviously not in play atm). With the neoprene insulator and insulated glycol hoses. Penguin 1/3 HP chiller with 50/50 propylene glycol/water. Have 4.9g of beer...

Just a +1 on this. Looking back at last IPA 5 gallon/CF5 batch with 6 ounces of dry hops, I wasted about 3qts. Maybe more than was needed on that one, but you just have to waste more with those beers.

I'm just getting going with the glycol chiller and TC. Do you switch the in and out on the TC coils when going lower than 40F like the instructions say?

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Me. Right now. Porter. It's Porter weather - 48F

Ready for action. Doing a "dry run" with some Star-San. Went from 89F to 60F in about 90 minutes. Then from 60F to 50F in about 45 minutes but I wasn't watching time closely on that one. Chiller is set at 28F. This is in an indoor area, so ambient temp is about 70F

Santa Claus came early and temp control is happening! Spike Temp control kit (with heater option) and Penguin 1/3 HP chiller.

I have CF5 and agree with what you said above about 6g. For yeast harvest, I just pour it into the mason jar from the tubing. Works well with like 5 PSI on there. Plus you can crack the butterfly valve slowly and I’ve found it fine. Have propagated 4 or five times now with different yeasts...

    What are you drinking now?

Technically my wife is drinking this and I tasted it. Pretty good! She really likes it. I’m drinking some warm not quite carbonated HB lager that I sampled prior to cold crash

As others have said - should not be a problem with foam if not carbonated yet. This is exactly how I've been doing it - ambient temp indoors of 68-70F CPT. BUT I DID JUST ORDER A PENGUIN CHILLER AND THE SPIKE TC KIT :ban:
