OG Come Up Short NB Caribou Slobber

I ran my second extract partial/full boil batch today and I'm trying to figure out where I may have gone wrong to only reach an OG of 1.042 instead of the 1.052 the recipe called for. The hydrometer was calibrated at 60 degrees to 1.000. I ended up chilling the wort in the test tube to 60 to...

    Beer issues

Talk to the manager at the Class VI (Army beer/liquor store for those who don't know) to see if they'll order some in.

First time brewer, long time drinker...

You'd think "deluxe" kit they'd include the $15 hydrometer. I'd have rather had that the thermometer. haha Did you rehydrate your dry yeast or did you pitch it dry for the caribou slobber? Thinking I'll rehydrate mine this weekend when I brew it.

First time brewer, long time drinker...

Welcome! I just received the NB deluxe kit last week. I ended up running a Irish Stout extract kit since the Caribou Slobber kit was missing the DME. Hope your fermentation is going well!

1st Batch - Full Boil NB Dry Irish Stout

Ok, I remember reading about the swamp cooler method. Current tank temp (5 hours into fermentation) is 70 and the airlock is active with some bubbling. Thanks for the input!

1st Batch - Full Boil NB Dry Irish Stout

Thank you for the input! I'll have to see what I can do to lower the temps. I can add ice to the tube? I eventually hope to get a chest freezer with temp control etc.

    Hello from the Sandhills...NC

Thank you for the heads up on SHH! I'll look them up. I was able to find an inactive facebook group for a Fayetteville club but I'm sure there must be a lot of people local to Fayetteville as well, I just need to get out and shake the bushes.

My first piece of brewing kit arrived, 3/8"x50' wort chiller from NY Brew Supply. Ordered on Monday and received on Wednesday, can't beat that for standard shipping. (I was, however, able to buy a Bayou SP10 burner and stainless 40 qt pot locally. The rest is scheduled to arrive Friday so...
