    Pressure Fermentation setup critique

That's my main concern. It would actually be easier for me to have the blowoff inline i think, but with what i have laying around, that would put the spunding right after the 2L and i didnt want it that close in case some blowoff didn't drop. If i can piece something better together along...

    Pressure Fermentation setup critique

I just want to source some setup critique/troubleshooting before I actually use this setup in case there is anything I can fix before I'm totally committed. I plan to try a pressure fermentation in a corny keg for my next brew. I've done my research, but the one "new" thing I am trying to...

    Does fining remove active yeast

Agree. There will be plenty of yeast left for bottling. I use cold crash and gelatin and have no problems.

Wort too cold to pitch yeast

My guess is that you did not have an accurate temp prior to the last water addition. Sitting static in the pot in an ice bath will have a serious temp gradient as you move from the edge of the pot in. The stir when you added more water gave you an accurate temp that more accurately reflects...

WLP 090 first use, possible issues

Perfect. Thanks for the replies y'all. I see it compared to 001 so often I was expecting similar fermentation visuals. I have some slight airlock activity now, so I'll just let it ride and trust that it's going to town under there. I'll check gravity in 3 more days, but I'm sure its doing...

WLP 090 first use, possible issues

Thanks. I understand different yeasts doing different things, but this was different enough from the variety of WL yeasts I have used that it warranted asking. I have read enough good things about 090 that I have confidence in it, mostly just wanted to be sure I didn't get a bad pack. I'm...

    The three most important things...

Pretty much what others have said. For me it has been: 1. Good Recipe with a good mash (simple, with lots of base malts, & balanced hops to start with) 2. Fermentation temp control. Biggest and best change in my qualtiy 3. Yeast count & health I'd say that those 3 things will get you 80% to...

WLP 090 first use, possible issues

I use 001 a lot, but wanted to try out 090. I bought it for a beer, but haven't had time to brew it yet and ended up pitching it into a cider today. I made a starter with apple juice. When I opened the yeast packet, it seemed very different than any other WLP packets I have used. No...

what's everyone drinking for Turkey Day?

Spiced fest Ale on tap along with some cider in bottles. I'm really not digging the spiced beer, unfortunately. Hoping my dad really likes it and I'll bottle most of it up for him. I picked up a couple of 6 packs of Real Ale's coffee porter for myself, but then I went and got a bottle Bulleit...

    Bird cooking

Took mine out of the brine a few hours ago. Vacuum sealed it in a bag with all the good stuff. It'll go on the smoker around 6. I volunteered for Turkey duty and did my usual bourbon pecan pie.

Keg leaks from bottom - Ideas for use or garbage?

Fill the bottom half with pea gravel, top half with soil and put a house plant in it? Might be a cool brewhouse decoration and eat up some of the CO2 floating around there.:drunk:

Show us your cider in a photo!!!

My first cider - bought a gallon of the central market brand unfiltered apple cider for the kids and fermented a liter of it in an Old Crow bottle with WLP001 and a little bit of honey (OG 1.050) just to see how it went. Cold crashed and racked to this after 2 weeks. I put it in the fridge and...

    Fermentation Temperature Delima

I tape the probe on mine to the carboy. Heat side kicks on when it is too cold, cold side kicks on when it is too hot. Not sure if that answers your question but you should be able to run it off of actual wort temp if you are using a thermowell. It has a delay setting to keep your freezer...

    Fermentation Temperature Delima

If you are going to get a second controller, you can go with one like this. This is what I was referring to in my earlier posts. It will do both heat and cool automatically, no switching needed. It will make your current one obsolete, but I'm sure you could find another use for it.

Traveling to Galveston, Texas - Beer to Try?

Austin Beerworks is probably my favorite brewery right now, Fire Eagle IPA & The Peacmaker Ale...so good. +1 on HEB being a good choice and I'm sure there is one in Galveston. I have found that HEB keeps their local beers pretty local, so you may not find the Austin beers in Houston or vice...

Traveling to Galveston, Texas - Beer to Try?

I don't know where to go for it in Galveston, but several great breweries in Houston. St. Arnold's, as mentioned puts out a great beer (Lawnmower) that is pretty easy to find in convenience stores and such. Karbach makes my favorite Houston beers...they just sold out to BMC, but day to day...

    Fermentation Temperature Delima

Dang, that is a pretty good drop. Maybe I need to keep a closer eye on mine...haven't hooked anything up to the heat side of my controller yet. I like the fan idea above. Filling the freezer will also help. Mine only holds one carboy 5 gal and two 1 gal carboys but I filled a lot of the...

Thoughts on using these to store harvested yeast...

Should be good. Get a stainless funnel for the transfers. Make sure you leave the cap loose or burp them periodically, but the PET will handle a decent amount of pressure.

    Fermentation Temperature Delima

If you can get a controller that does both hot and cold, you'd be set. The inkbirds are less than $40 and work well. If your stuck with what you have, I'd suggest starting by making sure you are staying cool enough. Doubt you'll lose enough heat inside the freezer at night to really hurt...
