    Sulfur smell in hefe

I have done Hefes with this yeast before and had them finish in 5 days at 68°. This yeast seems to work fast for me.

What do we enjoy about brewing - the process, the results or the tinkering?

I enjoy the entire process. Working on recipes to sharing with friends. I don't look to shorten my brew day as that is my "me" time. Time to forget about the stress of the work week and hang out with the dogs.

    Tubing Length

I think most use 3/16 ID line. I do, switched from 1/4". My setup likes 9 feet with a serving pressure of around 12 psi. My kegerator was set up for commercial kegs when I got it with 1/4 inch and it was like serving with a garden hose.

FastFerment Conical Fermenter -- Temp Control

I tried heat tape but couldn't keep it in place. I did have luck with a heat pad, the kind you use for a sore back, and held it in place with plenty of packing tape with a blanket for insulation. That seemed to be the only thing that would stick to the plastic. I used an Inkbird controller with...

FastFerment Conical Fermenter -- Temp Control

Before I built a fermentation chamber out of a small freezer I used a heating pad taped to the fermenter and controlled it with an Inkbird controller. Just keep the pad on it's lowest setting. The size and shape of the FastFerment make temp control a challenge.

Is there a consensus on the 'best' plastic carboys or fermenters?

I used a fastferment for two years before I dropped it and broke the valve off. Easy to dump sediment so no transferring to a secondary. I now use a stainless steel brew bucket.

    Why doesn’t everyone BIAB?

I went with the 3 vessel gravity system because that is what I thought was the only way to do it. I didn't know about BIAB when I started. Other than that, my brew day is my stress reliever day. I enjoy the process and the me time. SHMBO usually does girl stuff on brew day and leaves me and the...

Backyard Brewing - Babysit or ok to leave unattended?

I keep my dogs inside or in a fenced section of the yard so they don't get close to the burner. As for your question about watching the burner the whole time. I don't stand right there every second but I am never far away. I never step away for more than a minute or so. I will heat the strike...

( SS BT vs Anvil ) Bucket Fermenters

My LHBS carries the Anvil so I could get a good look at it. Not impressed. I bought the SSBT brewmaster instead and love it. Just a much better finish and attention to detail. Just my opinion.

What if you had permanently limited ingredients? Your choices?

I would be happy with just three things. Maris Otter malt, Mosaic hops and WLP007 yeast. That makes up my house ale and I always have a keg of this ready. Simple SMaSH recipe. If I had to drink only one beer this would be it.

In Defense of the Humble Keezer Collar

Whenever I use a picnic tap in my keezer i unhook the QD from the keg after I pour a glass. I'm just paranoid about having one fail or like you, have it hang open and loose a whole keg of beer and bottle of gas too. I have a two tap setup but sometimes have three kegs going. That is the only...

Grain mills— same thing or different?

+1 for the Kegco 3 roller mill. I got one last year for Christmas from my wonderful wife and love it. One of the best upgrades to my brewery.

American Pale Ale Three Floyds Zombie Dust Clone

I just tapped my first try at the OP recipe. Only change is the yeast. I used WLP007 because I had it on hand. Absolutely fantastic beer!

    10 - Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier clone

I use 7 lb Wheat, 4lb pilsner and a half lb rice hulls. 1 oz Hallertau hops @ 60. I use the WLP 300 Hefeweizen yeast. Fantastic recipe. A friend that lives in Germany for a few years said it was the best Hefeweizen she has has since she moved back.

Did I ruin my beer? First all grain

My municipal water is just nasty so I knew I couldn't use it to brew. I don't have a reliable source for RO so buying distilled is my only option until I invest in a RO system. I use one of the online spreadsheets to build my water but being older just learning how to use the spreadsheet was...

Did I ruin my beer? First all grain

mongoose33, I agree with you, and I respect your advice. It's best to learn in steps and build on that experience. Just giving my thoughts and advice if that is the route OceanBob5 or any new brewer chooses to go. I chose that direction and made some mistakes along the way. I definitely...

Did I ruin my beer? First all grain

OceanBob5, while I usually agree with mongoose33 that most people should start with extract brewing, you can go all grain to start. I did it and made a very good beer the first time. preparation and education are the key to successfully brewing all grain. I spent two months reading and...
