    I'm a Noob + Zulu Beer project

oh right! that's pretty cool, so you going to make a traditional beer as part of this project. when do you plan to make this? I could try to post you some dried yeast if you wanted, I'm not sure how long it would take to get there though.

    I'm a Noob + Zulu Beer project

Hey buddy, are you from South Africa? If so, you are in luck, as you can buy the proper traditional yeast for African beer at any of the major grocery stores like Checkers or Pick n Pay. You can find it at the baking sections near the bread yeast. And the yeast sometimes has the recipes on the...

    Brewery Etiquette

That's a bit harsh, maybe they should BITE THE BULLET and admit their beer is questionable. *insert rim shot*

This Really Annoys Me Pet Peeve Thread

As I am curious about the concept of protujuhla , i tried to Google this. Seems like the word in English is Prometheus, but the context of what protujuhla is, is not the same as the word Prometheus. but the concept of Prometheus camp vs confirmation camp in Finland kind of explains what I'm...

East Texas (Tyler) -- Looking to borrow a primary fermenter until mid-December

I've heard on a basic brewing radio podcast that white buckets from home depo are safe, as long as they are not recycled plastic. and that its best to avoid coloured plastics. good idea on splitting a batch into 2 buckets

East Texas (Tyler) -- Looking to borrow a primary fermenter until mid-December

very easy to add the airlock, and I've never had any issues. just never pour boiling liquid in the bucket, use a chiller or let it chill in your kettle. and the quality of the beer won't be affected at all

East Texas (Tyler) -- Looking to borrow a primary fermenter until mid-December

Not sure if what's available in the states, but how cost prohibitive is food grade HDPE bucket with lid in your area? You could use it to store grains or sanitise equipment afterwards. That's what the majority around here use, we don't have access to the awesome ale pails that seems to be the...

    Campden Killing Wet Yeast?

I believe adding Campden tablets and yeast, whether liquid or dry, at the same time, will kill the yeast. I'm sure an experienced cider maker will chime in, but I believe that if you going to add Campden tablets to kill wild yeast from the apples, you will need to wait a few days before adding...

    Guiness clone

no recipe but Guinness gets that amazing head from being dispensed with nitrogen gas or what we call suremix in South Africa, which is a blend of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. and I believe that a lot of Guinness clone recipes use aciduated malt.

FAQ: Aluminum Pots for Boil Kettles?

I would scrub the pot with a scourer and boil hot water and throw it out to build a nice oxide layer again. Should still be fine for brewing

    Forgot to take gravity reading

Your gravity might be lower due to a few things. Could be too much water, or your mash efficiency is lower than the guy who posted the original recipe. As long as it tastes good, then you are ok, because that's what counts, is the taste, not numbers.

    Skål!! from Norway

Welcome :) ! Brewing is plenty of fun, and can seem overwhelming at first, but once you have made your first batch, you will see its not that hard at all. And get your brew on, that way, you have ready to drink beer, while your other batch is fermenting!

Help! Immortal Kraken! err.. I mean Krausen!

refractometers don't measure correctly in the presence of alcohol. have you measured the gravity with a hydrometer? this is pretty much the only way to measure post fermentation gravity accurately at home. also, the beer might still be fermenting, 8 days is very soon,a lot of people will wait at...

    Forgot to take gravity reading

I think you will be fine, measure the gravity of the remaining wort. I highly doubt anything evaporated enough to make a massive difference. please post your gravity reading, for science :)
