I Think I'd Make an Excellent Advice Columnist- Another Rant

Undoubtedly. Mine was "gardening" the other day, which mostly meant playing in the dirt and then licking his fingers like he just ate original recipe KFC.

Chucking critters into an older ale

I think I may chuck some malto dextrin in. I have about a half-pound hanging out anyway. I may wait a month or two and see what happens first. Obviously, this keg has been tied up for 2 years, so what's another year? I have 8 kegs, and I've never had them all filled at once. My record is 6 so...

I Think I'd Make an Excellent Advice Columnist- Another Rant

Dear CG, I have a 17 month old boy. At what age is it appropriate to employ him in brewing? On a similar note, at what age should I give him his first beer? Impatient Dad

Chucking critters into an older ale

I'm not shamed. It was stores with my clean kegs. I actually forgot it was there until a couple of months ago. It's a 6% ABV blonde, so it's not a session beer, and it's a bit tart for session drinking, anyway. It will make a nice sour ale, though. Honestly, I would have drank it in 2010 if I...

Chucking critters into an older ale

Made a berry blonde ale in 2010 that has been in the keg ever since. I tasted it the other day, and it's a little tart but still tasty. So, I decided to play. I picked up a Wyeast Lambic blend and popped the top off the keg and dumped it in. I don't really have a question other than this: as...

    Fair enough. Thanks for clarifying.

I've always understood that breaking that pellicle will help acetobacter gain a hold an turn your beer into more of a vinegar sour rather than a lactic or Brett sour. The pellicle is there to protect the beer from oxygen, and racking to another container would not only break the pellicle but...

    all grain

I've done that, too. I have learned to respect and fear the steam.

How much amylase enzyme should I add?

My advice would be to buy How To Brew by John Palmer or The Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian. Read the beginners section. You are either not making beer or you have an odd set of ideas on how to make it. I'm not sure what you think you are making, but I don't think it will taste good.

    all grain

Now that i've got my 3 tier all grain setup figured out with 50' of wort chiller, I can't imagine going back. It could be tough to do in your apartment with two pots, but don't worry. You just need to have a towel and a plan. Let us know how it goes!

    all grain

Very good analogy. I can't tell you how many times i've thought about dumping some spent grain in a bowl with some cinnamon. It looks so tasty.

    Raspberry Pi Brewhouse controller?

I figured a touchscreen would be really cool or you could simply hook a USB hub up to it and you'd have plenty of room to use an arduino for your sensors and add a keyboard, mouse, and monitor if you want. The touchscreen is way cooler, though.

    Raspberry Pi Brewhouse controller?

Sounds cool. I think I'll wait until their supply chain catches up before I start trying anything with it. It would be pretty cool to run a whole brewhouse from it.

    Raspberry Pi Brewhouse controller?

Has anyone seen this? http://www.raspberrypi.org/ It's apparently a $35 Linux/GNU computer in a very small package. According to their site: What’s a Raspberry Pi? The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It’s a capable little...

    hop vine support structures...

I'm using the eave of my house, but it's not all that tall, being single story. If it doesn't work out as well as i'd like, I may try building a better support next year. The bed they are planted in gets at lease 8 hours of sunlight per day.

Seriously. You made this up, right? Just kidding. What makes the refractory part?

    White Labs explosion

You might get a bit more of the yeast's flavor characteristics from stressing the yeast, but you'll be fine. At least you know the yeast was healthy!

    hop vine support structures...

This has been an interesting thread. I plan on starting my hop growing endeavors this year, and have heard rumors of shorter hop trellises working well for some varieties. Does anyone have any experience using shorter trellises? I was thinking of going with the same kind of theory some...
