    What are you brewing today?

Just finished a Honey Blonde. I cut back on the honey because it seemed like A LOT in the recipe. Used a half pound instead of the full pound it called for in a 5gal batch. Good call? I picked up some 1gal jugs at my LHBS to do some six pack brews. Have alot of DME left over and plan on doing a...

    Adjusting recipe for color

Yeah. Between Ray Daniels "Designing Great Beers", the BJCP guidelines, my BrewPal software and my limited knowledge of certain grains, this is what I came up with. I think a touch of marris otter and roasted barley is going to be the solution to the problem.

    Adjusting recipe for color

Here's the recipe: 1lb 90L Crystal Malt 0.25lb Carapils 0.25lb Biscuit 2lb light DME 60 2lb light DME 15 1.5oz goldings 60 0.5oz goldings 15 0.5oz goldings at knockout It was just a touch malty for my taste, some roasted barley might offer a stronger flavor. Also this is the first recipe...

    Low O.G. - O.K.?

How long did you steep your partial? and did you "sparge" it at all? An issue I had was my brew calculation software was assuming a 60 minute steep and I only did 30 so my estimated and actual O.G.s were off by about .010 Also what temperature did you take the partial up to? I'm not the expert...

    Adjusting recipe for color

When making adjustments to a recipe to darken/lighten color, which is typically easiest to do without affecting the flavor of the beer too much? I came up with a recipe for an irish red ale and the flavor is pretty spot on, but its more of an irish orange ale than red. The options I came up...

Tasting test bottle - How soon?

I agree with android. I typically taste one a week as well as sip on any "left overs" I may have in my bucket on bottling day and take notes on the differences. 2-3 weeks generally is all it takes to stop getting much of a carbonation difference.

    Note on Anchor Steam bottles.

Yeah. I have a butterfly capper and the anchor at the south end is thinner than the necks of the Anchor Steam bottles. It didn't take a geometry major to figure out why they broke. If I wasn't planning on moving onto kegging soon I'd think about getting a bench capper, but it seems like a waste...

    Alternatives to Hydrometer

That looks like a perfect replacement! Thanks. I had seen refractometers before, but I always thought they gave a Lovibond rating or something. hehe.

    Alternatives to Hydrometer

So today as I was setting up to do my bottling, I grabbed my hydrometer out of my equipment tub and heard a distinctive 'crack' as I turned to head to the kitchen. My glass hydrometer had fallen right out of its tube and broken in half. This brew was a relatively low gravity and I had taken a...

    First brew day. No waiting

Welcome to the wonderful world of homebrew! You'll soon be as addicted and obsessed as the rest of us!

    Note on Anchor Steam bottles.

So today I learned a valuable lesson when bottling. Before filling a bottle shape you haven't previously used, make sure your capper fits it. I crushed an Anchor Steam neck and it shattered everywhere, full of my brew. Thankfully its just a 12oz loss and a big mess, but still. On a positive...

    Partial Mash Gravity Question

I had a similar mishap with my first partial last week. I was a good 8 points off my calculated (with BrewPal) gravity. I think my mistake was with the software however, where I did a 30 minute steep, it may have assumed a 60 minute lauter. In any case the next time I do a partial, I'm going to...

    Results of my first brew

Update: a little over 2 weeks after bottling and the beer is quite tasty. =] The "hot" alcohol feel I had described is gone and the wheat sweetness I expected is there. It carbed nicely in the last 2 weeks, tho some bottles carbed more than others which I find odd because I mixed the priming...

    First batch report

I had similar mishaps with my first batch, (which also wasn't long ago). Don't worry about the sanitation issues, I had what I would call a couple of problems while brewing and my batch still turned out great! (as a matter of fact, I'm sipping one of my first beers right now) I also did not...

One thing you'd tell a NEWB

If you are as absent-minded and scatter-brained as I am, there are 2 important things for brewing. A checklist of supplies (because if I don't use one, I inevitably forget) and A journal to write down my recipes and procedures in. I refer back to methods and results of said...

    Results of my first brew

Well I didn't figure I'd get much out of the secondary, really only did it because my primary and bottling bucket are the same bucket. heh. Plan on getting a 6.5gal carboy for primary and using the bucket for bottling only.
