My First Recipe Attempt - any advice?

Hey all, I'm planning this for a brewday tomorrow. Any advice on my recipe? I designed in BeerSmith, and am aiming for an Amber ale - a good balance between hoppy and malty. Small batch, BIAB. I should also note that I'm using what I have on hand, so if you think I need to adjust, I can change...

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

Bacgabe, if you're working with grains, get a scale! Totally worth the 20 bucks. You could have also just split the pound of crystal in half and said 'close enough'. But that's the beauty of homebrewing... Roll with it! I'm sure your brew will be great. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Blue Moon Clone

I ended up tossing .3oz whole coriander seed and .4oz dried orange peel into a mesh bag and into the fermenter at 6 days. I didn't actually sterilize in vodka or anything, but so far it looks like I'm free of infection. Finally got to bottling it this afternoon (stayed in primary for almost 5...

    Blue Moon Clone

I basically followed the original recipe, and it's been in primary for a week now. SG is at 1.012, so I think it's just cleanup time for the yeast... I'm concerned now about the orange/coriander amounts I used after tasting my hydro sample. I'm not really picking up either... so I think I'm...

    Blue Moon Clone

I found both whole coriander and dried ground orange peel at the Bulk Barn (Canada). I bought about the same amount as what Nilo shows above, all for about $6. The only thing is that I don't know what type of orange peel it is, but I'm not too concerned about that... Sent from my iPhone using...

    Blue Moon Clone

Just finished brewing this up. I did the original recipe (Wayne's) but used Tettnang hops instead because that's the only noble hops I had. Like others have suggested, I wanted to start out with the original and then go from there. I'll let you know how it ends up. Sent from my iPhone using...

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

ok, I think I'll either skip it or put hardly in. Just got back from the LHBS, and he said their dark crystal is about 135L... so that's a whole different grain altogether. I'll run it through beersmith to be sure - maybe it'll end up being a teaspoon that I add haha! Thanks for the replies.

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

Unfortunately my LHBS only has dark crystal malt in stock. Can I sub that for the 10L, and just use a very small amount, or would I be better off using more Vienna, or even Munich instead? I hate changing the recipe, especially the first time around, but hopefully there's something I can do. Any...

    Sparging for BIAB

I don't bother sparging. Squeeze the bag as much as I can, then that's it. My efficiency is great, and it's simply this way... So good enough for me! I should mention that I actually take the crushed grains from LHBS and run them through a food processor. Makes a very fine crush with lots of...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Just finished bottling this today. Got just shy of 1.5 gallons out of my batch, seems I lost quite a bit from transferring to secondary and transferring to bottling bucket. (was a 2 gallon batch) Mine looks just a shade off from swampy pond water... so light in colour I hope it actually has...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Honey & Chamomile Wheat: What a way to end a long day

Hoping this will be my next brew... it looks great! My current setup restricts me to 2 gal batches, here's what I've come up with... What do you think? Boil Size: 2.84 gal Batch Size (fermenter): 2.00 gal Estimated OG: 1.048 SG Estimated FG: 1.007 SG Estimated Color: 2.9 SRM Estimated IBU...

    New Brewer

Leave it, it'll taste better for it! 5-6 days isn't really enough IMO. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

Bottling first beer. Do I transfer yeast cake along with beer to bottling bucket?

I should also add... There is enough yeast still in the beer for carbonating. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

Bottling first beer. Do I transfer yeast cake along with beer to bottling bucket?

No, you want to rack the beer off that trub. Try not to disturb the layer too much... It's a little late now, but 6 days is a very short primary... Did you take gravity readings? What were they? Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Just took a hydro sample. Beer smells great and is very pale. There seems to be a lot of floaties in it, maybe because I did BIAB, and crushed extra fine? Just wondering if that could throw off my reading (this is my first biab). I had an OG of 1.047, and now it's two weeks into primary and SG...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Just brewed my first BIAB ever, scaled down the recipe to 2 gallons into the fermenter. Looks great, my efficiency was a little better than expected so OG is at 1.047. Instead of flaked corn (couldn't get it at LHBS, and grits are impossible to find here) I used cornmeal that I cooked with a...

    Feeding a yeast starter

ok so that was idiotic of me... I posted this EXACT same question a couple years ago. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/using-coopers-brewing-sugar-yeast-starter-can-i-do-215346/ Short answer - no, not a good idea. Dang.

    Feeding a yeast starter

This will be the first time I'm going to make a yeast starter... I normally use liquid yeast smack packs, but I got some ale yeast from the lhbs that was seriously only labelled "ale yeast", came in a tub that I had to weigh out, and I don't know if I have quite enough... so a starter will be a...

Using Cooper's brewing sugar for a yeast starter.... can I do that?!

ok, thanks for the help! I'll have to make the trek out to the LHBS. Convenience is not worth ruining my beer
