Took OG reading after boil and not before...

Thanks, @RM-MN that clears things up a lot. Someone had told me that if I take my post boil volume (3.5) and divide it by my pre boil volume (4) and then multiply by my OG that will give me a close approx. Is that correct? I did the math and it a lot higher than I would have expected. And I...

Took OG reading after boil and not before...

Cool deal, appreciate the insight there. Still very new to all of this, the current batch this post is about is only the second one under my belt. I'll be sure to take the specific gravity before boil next brew day. Should be this weekend or next.

Took OG reading after boil and not before...

Dang, sounds like I really didn't go about it right then ha. OG was 1.057 the recipe called for it being 1.058. I did not mix the wort well as I took the reading though, so that could be a skewed result.

Took OG reading after boil and not before...

And now I have absolutely no idea what my efficiency was, I was using BIAB and I decided to sparge and double crush the grains just to really boost the efficiency I now don't get to figure out. Gotta love the learning curve...

Is my air lock full enough?

I've never used an S Style air lock before so just wanted to make sure.

    Dry hopping with "old" hops?

I did my first BIAB batch yesterday, and I had seen this issue coming but wasn't sure how to solve it. I scaled down a 5 gallon recipe to 3 gallons but I have left over hop pellets. I put then in a zip lock and got as much air out as possible then threw them in the freezer. Will they be ok to...

    Damnit... Help please

This one is on her second week of fermenting. I control the temperature by wrapping a damp towel around it and re-wet it every 6 hours or so. The inside of my house is 72 F on average so Im assuming the beer should be 68-70 maybe. Its a double IPA if that makes any difference. But yeah thats...

    Damnit... Help please

So I check on my beer routinely, mainly just to make sure the air lock is nice and snug, and to admire of course. Well this morning I awake to this white **** all over the inside of my carboy! Is this an infection? Normal? No clue just some ****? I mean cmon. Anyways, thanks for any advice...

    BIAB equipment alterations

Awesome replies guys, appreciate the knowledge. One common thing Ive read time and time again is to have those grains milled FINE. So ill make sure to have my LHBS grind those bad boys into sand if I can. Ill make sure to write up a brief post on my first AG experience.

    BIAB equipment alterations

So I plan on brewing my first BIAB batch in the next two weeks or so. And I have been reading up on it pretty avidly so that I know all of the bases I need to cover for an AG brew. Everything seems fairly straight forward, but I do want to alter a few things when it comes to equipment to...

Trying To Start A Homebrew Club

Definitely will. As of now we have four people that have emailed me. Not too bad for only searching forums, my hopes are that once I throw some fliers up at local brewpubs Ill catch a few more. If by mid April we don't have enough people Ill say screw it and start up anyway with however many...

Trying To Start A Homebrew Club

To be honest I have no idea, I wish I could help here but I have never even been part of a brew club, much less ran one. But with that being said I envision it being a group of guys getting together once a month and sharing their beer. I want it to be as informal as possible and just have a easy...

Trying To Start A Homebrew Club

I live in San Marcos, Tx. I looked for a brew club and the closest are in Austin and San Antonio (for those who don't live in Tx its a 45 minute-ish drive either way). Yes, it isn't a crazy distance, but Im looking for people in town that would like to share some beers or brew together. There...
