Galaxy IIPA - Final tweaking done, thoughts?

Hmmmm. Ya. There is a fair amount of debate out there about IPA vs IIPA. I always thought DIPA and IIPA were mostly the same. Who knows at this point. even BJCP style guidelines are blurry in this area: http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style14.php Recipe currently sits as: 11# 2 row...

Galaxy IIPA - Final tweaking done, thoughts?

Oooooooh. I see. I didn't realize crystal/carafoam both are cara malts. Maybe if I cut the DME back a bit, subbed for sugar, drop the carafoam... ehhh I dunno. The original intent was to make this recipe out of things I had around and wanted to use up. Not a great way to brew really. Kind...

Galaxy IIPA - Final tweaking done, thoughts?

I was under the impression that boil additions over 100 ibu is wasted. How much aroma hops did you use? I have lots of galaxy but I would have to go out to buy more of anything else. And prices are steep locally. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

Galaxy IIPA - Final tweaking done, thoughts?

I bumped the galaxy and cascade dry hop both up to 1.5. Overall gives me 3.2 oz of dry hops. Should be tasty. Thanks.

    Let's clarify: 1 B/mL or 2.5 B/mL or ???

From my poking around in the last month I have come across a seemingly unspoken inconsistency. Depending which pitch rate calculator you use, the resulting size of starter or amount of slurry drastically differs. Mr. Malty: http://www.mrmalty.com/calc/calc.html Default yeast concentration of...

Why did the yeast settle underneath the trub?

I have had this problem with T58. or T85.... whichever it is. I basically just poured out as much of the top layer as I could and then made a starter and stored the crashed result. Looked much cleaner. It surprised me when I saw it also. Nobody I knew had come across it.

Galaxy IIPA - Final tweaking done, thoughts?

I made some tweaks. Added 60 L, dropped some base malt, cut barley in half, reduced sugar, increased DME. Hope I did not mess it up..... Amount Fermentable PPG °L Bill % 10.5 lb Canadian - Pale 2-Row 36 1.75 68.9% 2 lb Dry Malt Extract - Light -(late addition)42 4 13.1% 10 oz Corn...

Thanks. What is the reason you would drop cara down. Doesn't seem like much in there. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

Galaxy IIPA - Final tweaking done, thoughts?

I wanted to use up the roasted barley I've got. In future I would totally use a debittered malt. I have some 60L I might use instead of some of the pale though maybe. Would also help with the sweetness I thought 1.020 was pretty sweet still. I'm not looking for SWEET but balanced. Berliner...

Galaxy IIPA - Final tweaking done, thoughts?

Better formatting and an alternative place to leave comments: http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/146458/galaxy-iipa I took into consideration what I could from the forum and my last poll for input. I made a new thread simply because it has been awhile and this recipe is actually...

    Galaxy IIPA - feedback please

I have an APA on s05 I will wash the yeast from and then make a big starter. I will use the pitch rate calculator and make it accordingly. Thanks for the help. If you are wondering how it turns out you can follow the wordpress link in the recipe later. It won't be active until I brew it though...

    Galaxy IIPA - feedback please

Thanks everyone so far. I have tweaked it by playing with the ratios to try to meet your comments. I may also take a crack at step mashing. Alternatively could I extend my infusion time to 1 hour? Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

Interesting idea. I have never step mashed before. Thanks for the idea. For the hops I guess I misspoke. I want a tropical presence indeed. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Galaxy IIPA - feedback please

I usually add 15 minutes left in the boil to sanitize. I'm not sure this is best practice but it's the habit I have gotten in to. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Galaxy IIPA - feedback please

I made some tweaks as you suggested. Really trying to keep the colour, alcohol, and hops in those current levels. In regards to the sweetness I want it to be balanced leaning towards refreshing hops finish. I can bump up hops if needed. Like I said. Me likey the hops and my wife doesn't mind...

    Galaxy IIPA - feedback please

This is why I and here. You guys rock. Thanks for the tips. I will go tweak a bit. If you are interested, check back in later today and have a look. I am only a little hesitant to use corn sugar because I fear the cidery taste. Maybe I'll go half and half. It is a little overly complex but I...
