Using an Auto Siphon as a Wine Thief

I know this has been talked about on here, but no one (from what i can find) has said how you do this without starting a siphon and making a mess. So, how do I use the auto siphon without actually starting a flow. I have a 3 gallon batch in a 5 gallon carboy. I'm going to move to a 3 gallon...

    Which Malt for Kolsch?

So, blonde ale is basically a broader, American version of Kolsch? Obviously that is an over simplification.

    Which Malt for Kolsch?

So, a week from tomorrow I am going to brew a SMaSH Kolsch (AG). My LHBS doesn't carry a Kolsch or Pilsner malt though, which seem to be the two most common for the style. My choices of base malts are 2 row, 6 row, Marris Otter, and Pale Ale. I guess I am leaning towards just basic 2 row...

    Filtering Post Fermentation

I don't keg yet. Still saving up for a kegging system and kegerator. It is an IPA. My thought was that the hop particles would help add some character to the beer, but in retrospect, maybe filtering and dry hopping would be just as affective.

    Filtering Post Fermentation

So, I decided to leave all of the hop pellets in the wort when I transferred into the carboy thinking they would all settle into the trub. It has only been a week but there is still quite a bit floating around. I plan to leave it in the primary for another week and then secondary for at least 2...

need help !!! dont have 2 airlocks...

I would disagree with the other 2 posters. You want that airlock to let the co2 out of the new one since it will be a more active fermentation. Although, to argue with myself, foil isn't going to hold it in so tight that your carboy will explode or anything. To argue with myself again though...

New to the brew. Got tips?

Be patient! On my first first brew, I decided to take a taste test at like day 3 and it was awful and I thought I ruined it. 3 weeks later it was fine, but still very young. Now I do minimum 2 weeks primary, 2 weeks secondary, 2 weeks bottles. Not a perfect science, just use that as a frame of...

    Mash Help ASAP!

Alright. You guys have calmed me down. Lol. I was starting to think I had just ruined my batch. I guess as long as the process ends in drinkable beer, I have done my job. Beersmith said it would be 6.5% alcohol with 72% efficiency so I guess I have a little efficiency to give up and still have a...

    Mash Help ASAP!

May I ask what the advantage of the second pot is? What is the difference in just doing that into my brew kettle and topping with the rest of the mash? Genuinely curious, not questioning your knowledge.

    Mash Help ASAP!

Obviously the main problem in this endeavor was poor planning, so you can call me stupid for that. But I need some expert advice.

    Mash Help ASAP!

So, here is the problem. My original plan was to do 3 gallon BIAB batches so I got a 5 gallon kettle. Turns out a 5 gallon kettle will not hold all of the water and grains you need for a BIAB mash. So, my next plan of action was to turn my cooler into a mash in a bag tun because I figured I...

    Water Ratios?

Okay, so I will go with a 3 gallon mash and a 2.25 gallon sparge. The extra quart should account for a little trub loss without ruining my effeciency.
  13. KendallAdkins

    Water Ratios?

8 pints is a gallon. I'm an idiot. Lol. I'm a chef and former math major, so that was just a brain fart.

    Water Ratios?

I've looked around on here and found some pretty good info on water ratios. I just want to throw out what I'm about to do to make sure I don't have any flawed math. Total Grain Bill is 8 lbs for a 3 gallon batch. 1.5 quarts per lb puts me at 3 gallons for mash. Grain loss of 1 pint per lb...

    BIAB SMaSH IPA

It says it's for a 3 gallon. I don't mind a high ABV. Makes me go through it slower.

    BIAB SMaSH IPA

    For aroma I presume?

    BIAB SMaSH IPA

I'm about to make my first batch of all grain beer. I found this recipe online and I was wondering what you guys thought of the ratios. 3 Gallon Batch 9lbs of Maris Otter 1oz Centennial for 60 2oz Centennial for 10 1oz Centennial for 1 Safale S-04 Beersmith says it will come out to...

    Northern Brewer BIAB Kits

I am about to buy a couple BIAB recipe kits from Northern Brewer. Any suggestions? I was thinking Irish Red Ale and Dead Ringer IPA. Maybe Smashing Pumpkin Ale? Has anyone tried their kits before?

    How did you find us?

    I googled home brew forums.

    BIAB Starter Kit?

I have been looking online for a starter kit for 3 gallon BIAB batches, but I can only find them set up for 5 gallons. Does anyone know of a kit that comes with a 5 gallon carboy for primary and a 3 gallon for secondary? Or do I just need to build my own kit? Just to clarify, I don't mean...
