Best brews to ferment in winter?

My basement is in the 58-60 degree range. What are some good beer styles and yeasts to use at this temperature? Better to wait until it warms up a little for typical ales? I'm thinking kolsch, steams, maybe lager by sticking fermenters in water and adding frozen bottles? What's up with...

I need a good, cheap beer recipe

pale ale .5 crystal - $2 6# dme - $25 2oz hops - $7 dry yeast - $4 $38 for a basic recipe; i'd go with a kit and then after you figure things out buy some stuff in bulk.

    Thinking of starting home brew

i think i save some $...not counting hours though. and i love to experiment w/ recipes. here a case of good beer costs $30+. i can make 2 cases of good beer for $30+ using extract; basic equipment is about 150. so after only 5 batches i break even...or that's what i tell myself.

went to lhbs very negative about coopers

i try to make dung smell like roses. i just need to build up my pipeline and do it before the wife gets home on a weeknight AND have dinner made...not to mention my stove is not capable of boiling over 2 gallons. this week i did a coopers real ale (30 ibu) w/ 1# steeped crystal 20 and 1/2...

    Pumpkin Beer: Removing Matter

i failed to clear my pumpkin. each bottle has 1/2" of pumpkin on bottom of bottle...it's chunky, but with the 7%abv it seems to work. it's like sweet alcoholic pie. you can only do so much, that pumpkin gets messy.

coopers real ale kit into an IPA?

i saw that lagunitas ipa uses the willamette/cascade hop combo, so i have high hopes for great hop flavor and aroma. not sure what my additions will be, but looking to use 3 oz of cascade and also 3 oz willamette including the dry hop.

simple keg system w/ picnic tap?

haha...i think you're right; i'll probably just start looking for a cheap tank and regulator on craigslist.

simple keg system w/ picnic tap?

no that charger looks awesome. thanks. so the only other thing i would need is a draft party faucet for $10 and a corny or two. seems like a great way to keg and age some of my beer and take 1 to the mountains with my buddies. bottle every other batch.

simple keg system w/ picnic tap?

i've only been brewing for a few months (already sick of bottling) and have read some threads on kegging w/ the cornies etc. seems like an expensive investment right now especially w/ kegerator and all attachments. is there any type of system where i could keg my beer, carbonate in the keg...

coopers real ale kit into an IPA?

i think the coopers can is 3.75#; i didn't know if i should just enter it as amber malt extract for an estimated OG on the hopville.com calculator?

    Coopers kits

excited to see how 3# dme makes this different that the ipa kit i followed the instructions on. that ipa definately needed some flavor / aroma hops. it is a little expensive considering you can get a midwest/austin kit for about the same and it would be AWESOME.... my coopers kit comes in...

BELGIAN!!!! i didn't even like this stuff 2 months ago, but now i can't get enough. light but complex and with that funk 'n spice from the yeast....wow. i did a saison and then washed the yeast and made a belgian blonde. these are some easy drinking beers that will mess you up. maybe best too...

    Coopers kits

i have a few cooper's kits now (real ale, sparkling ale, and stout) and that's the formula is was thinking, maybe with some steeping grains to style. do you do an hour boil? seems kit doesn't need to be boiled, dme doesn't really benefit from extended boil, and if you're adding flavor hops...

    Why bleach and sanitize bottles?

I saw in the bottle cleansing thread yesterday that many people soak their bottles in bleach, rinse, dishwasher, and then dip them in sanitizer solution before bottling. What a process. Isn't bleach a sanitizer? So couldn't you just soak bottles in bleach water, rinse and fill??? What's the...

adding hops to Coopers Dark Ale?

maybe just do a half hour boil adding dme at 30, 1/2oz hops at 15 and 5. at flameout add the coopers kit. i have a coopers ipa right now and it's too low on hops. i may have boiled it for 15 mintues. i'll definately be adding some steeping grains and hops to next coopers can. i like them...

    Hop Storage?

i was thinking about just putting 1oz into ziplick snack bags and then putting them all in a mason jar. 16 bags per jar, 2 jars. oh yeah, these are pellet hops. my recipes will definately focus on these hops over the next few months. looking forward to doing single hop pale ale experiment...
