6 Gallon Carboy of for Belgian Wit?

Nodding Head is great. Even better, go around the corner to Monks and ask for the Beer Bible. They are both owned by the same people. They have have 300 beers from around the world, and their steamed mussels are amazing. www.monkscafe.com

6 Gallon Carboy of for Belgian Wit?

I'm going to be doing a Belgian Wit beer from a mini mash kit I got through Austin Home Brew. Would it be ok to use a 6 gallon carboy as my primary? I hear these beers can get pretty active during fermentation. I can easily put a blowoff hose on it. If 6 gallons is too small, I'll go with a 6.5...

    Bars in Miami?

Oh well. Its a short visit. Sounds like I better trade my beer in for a drug mule.

    Bars in Miami?

I'll be there this weekend. Can anyone suggest a place that is laid back and serves good beer?

    Bad day requires good beer

Bad days happen. To quote one of my favorite movies, "This job would be great if it weren't for the customers". Enjoying the Chimay with the dogs sitting next to me as we speak. Tomorrow, as they say, is another day.

    Stewarts in Delaware

I was there a couple years ago. I think I had a couple of the Hefeweizen. They had good beer, good food and good service. I haven't been back, but its on my list when I'm in that neck of the woods. If you're in Bear, might as well drive down to the Dog Fish Head Brewery. Its probably no more...

    Bad day requires good beer

So...Its been the day from hell. Its not like my woman left and took the dog or anything, but its been one of those days. My first batch is in bottles for another 2 weeks, so I needed something to lift me up. I stopped at the beer shop on my lunch break and picked up some Chimay Blanc. I figured...

What stupid things did you used to think were true?

Here's one from a noob... Before I did any research, I thought letting something ferment in a bucket would be unsanitary. I've never cleaned anything in my kitchen as much as I've cleaned/sanitised my brewing equipment.

1st batch in bottles: a learning expecrience

The bottling part was pretty easy. I just cleaned the bottles with some oxy clean and dried/sanitized by putting them in the dishwasher with the dryer on. SWMBO bottled while I capped. We had an assembly line going and that made it super easy. Just remember to do the little things, like...

1st batch in bottles: a learning expecrience

Last night SWMBO and I bottled our first batch, an extract Bavarian Wheat kit. Just a couple observations in no particular order: My FG was around 1.014, right in the middle of what the recipe said I should expect. I had about 4 1/2 - 4 3/4 gallons of wort, so I used just a hair under 3/4...

    First Brew now in Fermentor

I wouldn't continuously remove the airlock. Why take the risk? I would just replace the airlock with a blowoff tube in the stopper and leave it alone until its ready to go into the primary. Just be sure to put the blowoff tube in a glass of sanitized water.

    Another Apfelwein question

I followed EdWort's recipe yesterday. The only pure apple juice I could find with no additives or preservatives listed on the label came from concentrate. I tried to avoid anything with preservatives as I've been told that can stall fermentation. Are there any drawbacks to using a juice that...

SG reading for Bavarian Wheat beer?

Getting close to bottling my first batch. I just took a hydrometer reading and it was 1.014, which is the same as a reading I took 2 days ago. The instuctions said I should expect a FG between 1.012 and 1.02. The plan is to take another test on Saturday and bottle on Sunday. Does it sound like...

    Looking for inexpensive aeration kit

Will I need a filter of some type going this route? I've heard some people mention putting some cotton in the line.

    Looking for inexpensive aeration kit

I am getting ready to start my second batch and I'm looking for an inexpensive Aeration Kit. I've dropped a lot of money on my supplies, so I'm looking for some ideas that can save me a couple bucks. Maybe a stupid question, but I'll throw it out there. Can I use something like a filtered...

    Shelf life for liquid yeast?

Sounds good. This will only be my 2nd batch. I'v enever made a starter, but it seems easy enough.

    Shelf life for liquid yeast?

I'm looking to place an online order for some new supplies and a new extract kit, most likely a Wit beer. I was planning on buying the White Labs liquid yeast to go along with the beer kit. I expect delivery time to be about 3 days and it will be packed in ice. If I refigerate as soon as I get...
