Homebrew conditioning vs commercial brewers conditioning?

A lot of commercial breweries pasteurize their beer and run it through a filter. In a fairly basic homebrew setup the yeast, being live creatures, continue to change the beer over time, but if the beer is filtered or pasteurized the yeast activity is stopped and the beer flavor remains unchanged...

Klyph, did you ever get your on-demand sparge water dialed in? I'd be interested to know how that went.

Brewing my first cider, is this juice ok?

I actually just bought two gallons of this same juice. I'm using two yeast strains to see if I like one better than the other - bubbling right along after only a couple hours

Making a starter tonight - need help.

You could use it all, or split it in half and save it for another batch. From what I've understand (and this could be wrong) is that the yeast will reproduce until they are at a certain density, the sugar is used up, or they can't stand the alcohol anymore.

Making a starter tonight - need help.

I think an important thing to remember is that as long as you are working in a sterilized environment, screwing this up is pretty hard to do. I put my starters on a stir plate for 2-3 days and pitch the whole thing. This may not be "optimal", but fermentation starts quickly and makes great beer...

logic circuit to control and troubleshoot rig

As far as keeping it simple goes - use the wall transformer, and split the 5V to all your IC's, and wire in an LED at each IC that turns on when it's not safe. This gives you the voltage you need and the indicator you want.

Siphon started from my blowoff tube?

I had a yeast starter on a stir plate that made a really intense kraisen. I installed a blowoff tube and put the other end into a jar of sanitizer. Later, after it had fermented out, I put the starter, with blowoff tube still submerged in the jar of sanitizer, into the fridge to crash cool. I...

    Sanitizer in my starter

Only problem with that is that it would have bubbled out past the foil. Has anyone ever gotten krazen on a starter? I had never even heard of it, but the blowoff tube was filling up with foam.

    Sanitizer in my starter

I was planning on making a Czech Pilsner this weekend, but I may have run into a little snag...I made 1.5qt starter two days ago, but after 8 hours it was bubbling through the airlock. I had never seen this before, but quickly installed a blowoff tube into a vessel of sanitizer (starsan). This...

    Peristaltic pumps

...so there I was, writing away in a feeble attempt to graduate when I suddenly became deeply interested in peristaltic pumps...McMaster-Carr has an amazing variety of tubing with temp ratings, food and beverage use, and in a variety of durameters (hardness). Not sure if you've bought your...

How to make a starter from trub

You make a small amount of wort (about 1/3 cup light DME to 1 quart water), after its cool, pour this into your starter vessel, add your yeast and stir bar, attach an airlock, and put this on your stir-plate. The stir plate spins the starter and increases yeast propagation. It usually takes...

    Removing Labels From Bottles

WD-40 actually works really well for removing any glue residue. Just give a solid spray after peeling the label off and take a washcloth or sponge and wipe, usually comes right off.

    how long before pitching starter?

I'm probably a bit lazy, or don't know quite know how to decant but I don't pour out the liquid after it ferments out. I just pour it all into the carboy and I've always seen active fermentation (1-2 bubbles per second) within 12 hours.

    straining

Hey there - I found out this weekend that hop pellets really clog up a strainer. Whole hop leaves are much easier to work with. I ended up being able to get the majority of my extract wort into a carboy and leave a funnel full of hop sludge. Honestly, I don't know if there's a better solution...
