    Brewing with Kids?

My son always helps me. He wants to help bottle and I let him drop the hops in and i help him with brewing vocabulary. My wife came home and he told her "mommy, today we brewed IPA and stout!" I don't see a problem with it at all. I was about his age, 4, when I first had a sip if beer and I...

    Brew Dogs...

I think this show is pretty cool, mostly because it makes me wish I could travel more.

    Saint Arnold?

I might be grabbing 5 on Saturday, they're holding them for me. If you don't get any, let me know.

    Saint Arnold?

Just looked on Craigslist and they have a ton apparently off westheimer and montrose. Search it!

    Fruit flies

I had a loose lid like you. When I looked inside at racking time I only saw one, but figured after 3 weeks fermenting that it'd be noticeable at the time. Don't know how long it takes, but it didn't take long for me. I am not optimistic, but lesson learned. Don't dump it just yet, check it early...

    Fruit flies

I had the same thing 4 months back on a 1.065 beer that was liberally hopped. Tasted fine at racking but at two weeks in the bottle was straight up vinegar. I have one bottle in the fridge still that I've been saving just to see if it's also the same, hoping the other bottles I tried were just...

Equipment costs, and should I take a class?

I took an all grain class at Austin home brew and I think it was twenty bucks. If I had to do it again I would, just because I learned a lot actually seeing it and being there to ask little questions along the way. Plus we got to kill five gallons of beer at the end and I met lots or really cool...

    First Porter Homebrew

Aww man. That's terrible. My esbs were like that too. What I did was just slightly pry the cap off a little bit, wait and then pry a little bit more. Sucks that didn't work for you. I learned my lesson and always research the amount of priming sugar to use now.

    f@#k its hot

Deep Ellum IPA is great. All that I have had from peticolas is great. Been to Lakewood brewing, which was good. I live in the Austin area, and my favorite beers come out of Hops and Grain in Austin. They have some stuff in better grocery stores in the DFW area, look for Alteration and The One...

    First Porter Homebrew

Probably over carbed. I did the same thing to an ESB. At 2 weeks it was super fizzy and sour/acidic. I ended up having one bottle bomb. What I did to fix the problem was vent the caps and recap them. A few weeks after doing that the carbonation was way better and the acidic sour taste was gone...

    Infection? Please no!!!

I brewed that kit a month ago, partial mash, and mine looked very similar to yours. I found it odd, but then I realized I had never made a beer with 14 oz of hops, so I just let it ride. Turned out fine. You're good.

    What to buy

Thanks for the responses, I should have mentioned everything I already had! First thing I bought after kit number one was a hydrometer. After kit two I got an immersion wort chiller. That was the kind of stuff I needed though, luxury vs necessity. I do the swamp cooler method just due to the...

    What to buy

Also, I have roughly 400 bucks to spend, and I use craigslist a lot. I saw that I could mash about a max of 25 pounds in a ten gallon round cooler, but I may want more room in the not too distant future for larger brews. I am really liking mashing in a bag, just for the ease and all, so I'm not...

    What to buy

I do 3 gallon full boils mashing in my bottling bucket with a large brain bag and would like to upgrade. I have a keggle, but have yet to use it and set it up. Things I need are a cooler mash tun, grain mill, hydrometer would be nice, keggle sight glass, brewsmith (free version ran out, but I...

As of last week, "sharknado" has been on steady rotation in my house. Can't wait for the sequel.

    Salted Caramel Porter Distaster

Just curious if this was ever rebrewed? I was out with a friend today who was having salted caramel ice cream and she said "why don't you make a salted caramel beer?" I figured i'd put the salt in with the priming sugar, but reading this i am thinking just put salt in the glass and pour the...

Do you guys set a limit on your drinks?

When I brewed beer I enjoy drinking I can drink 3-4 a day. My wife will ask me sometimes how many beers I've had, and I ask her how many chips she's had. If I brewed a beer I don't enjoy I try to at least drink 2 a day, just to figure out what I did wrong and learn from it, and to help empty...

    Sharing Brew

I had a similar situation with one of my friends, he had no equipment but was eager to learn. Rather than have him spend money on equipment he might never use again, I told him to go get a cheap ingredient kit, I think it was like 20-25 bucks, come over and I will show him how to brew it, bottle...

    Grownup baseball cards

If say it is similar. I recently met up with my brother and we swapped brews. Mine were, not being cocky or anything, substantially better than his, and I could tell that he had fermented higher and his priming sugar was off, but man, I really liked just sharing brews and dissecting the flavors...
