    Stains on glassware

I've got that same problem with some beer glasses we picked up on a wine walk a year ago. The glass is very thin, but otherwise looks like normal glassware, except that it has an "Alive After Five" logo applied to it through some sort of painting or decaling. None of our regular glassware, much...

Why not just start with all grain?

At the risk of looking more foolish than I already do, if possible, what does PLETO stand for?

Why not just start with all grain?

Don't knock the "curse of knowledge." As a recently retired technical writer, it kept me employed for 40 years. I started brewing with extracts because my wife bought me a complete brewing kit from Northern Brewers for Christmas 2019. She knew I was a cheapskate and would never take the plunge...

    Safety Lesson for Beginners

Ditto what Balrog said. But you must not be married. If I made a mess like that while brewing, my wife would see to it I wasn't here to tell the tale.

    Purging headspace when bottling

Forgive me for being a newb, but I thought the O2 in the headspace was necessary to activate the yeast so that they carbonate the beer.

Oregon Any Brewers in Coos Bay, Bandon, Reedsport?

Thanks for the responses. It would be great to get a brewing club going down here. I did talk to a guy who said there used to be a brew club that met regularly at 7 Devils, but they quit meeting even before Covid. (I guess they felt brewing was too contagious.) :>)

PLAATO Airlock V3 - Wireless Hydrometer and Airlock

I just got an email ad for this product from Midwest Supplies, and came here to see if there were any reviews. Although at $129.00 it seems awfully expensive, my first thought was that it would help prevent oxidation by making it unnecessary to open the fermenter to take hydrometer readings...

What do you do with your spent grains?

I either put mine in the compost pile, or put them in my wormbox. The worms seem to like them after they've matured a bit. (Yeah, my other hobby is gardening.)

Want a Recipe for Pickiling Carrots

No starter required. I mostly make sauerkraut, and the only ingredients are cabbage, caraway seeds, and salt. The lids come with a vacuum pump to put the contents under a vacuum while fermentation is getting underway, to inhibit the growth of any aerobic bacteria. The only vegetables I've had...

Want a Recipe for Pickiling Carrots

I use these lids for making pickles and kraut and the like. (I have no connection to the company, just a satisfied customer.) https://nourishedessentials.com/products/the-easy-fermenter Their site also has recipes for lots of pickled veggies and the like.

    Grenade!!

Did you TNT experts ever figure out why your brews exploded? I'm asking for the purpose of learning from your experiences how not to accidentally off any of the folks I share my beer with. I'm almost positive they'd never forgive me.

    Pumpkin Ale Steeping Question

I'm finally getting back to report on the Northern Brewer Smashing Pumpkin Ale I made following IslandLizard's suggested procedure. I've got to say, it came out wonderfully. My son served it at my daughter's Halloween Birthday bash, and those in attendance agreed that it was a great success...

    How do you aerate?

As a cheapskate and a newb, I pour the 2.5 gals. of cooled wort through a funnel and sieve into the carboy, then add the top-up water in 1/2 gal. increments from a gallon jug, shaking the heck out of the jug for a minute before adding it to the carboy. The yeast seems to find the oxygen level to...

    Pumpkin Ale Steeping Question

Maryland has vicious mosquitos? I was raised on a wheat/barley farm in north central Montana, and can well remember going outside on a summer day weighing 160 lbs, and coming back in a half hour later weighing 120 from all the blood loss to the mosquitos, deer flies and horse flies. But it kept...

    Pumpkin Ale Steeping Question

Wow! Great information, IslandLizard! Thank you for taking the time to be so detailed. I feel confidence with this info to make this brew, and will start tomorrow morning (the advantage of being an antique retired gent is that the weekend is seven days long). I'll be using my five gallon...

    Pumpkin Ale Steeping Question

Thanks, Leezer. The cost of 10 lbs of rice hulls was approx. 2.5 times the cost of 1 lb on Amazon, so at one cup a batch, I've now got rice hulls to last me for my entire brewing career I think. :>)
