I had bad luck with a kettle screen in the BK. Seemed to clog with either pellet or leaf hops. I hate to open the BK once the chill is on. I use a full false bottom in my current BK. If I use a decent amount of leaf hops and let them settle, the whole thing acts as a giant filter bed.

I think all of the Igloos warp at one time or another. I like the kettle screen for a SS filter. Easy to unscrew and clean. When I mashed in an Igloo I used the screen + a false bottom. Why not?
If your water is that bad, I would use RO water. Might not be worth investing in an RO system just for brewing.
Most RO brewers just get their RO water from the grocery store. Most stores now have a machine which fills 1-5g vessels. You should be able to get your total water volume on the...
Hey all, I just got a Brew Rig which sports 3 Banjo burners. I'm running off of HP propane (standard tank). I am worried that running multiple burners will trip the free flow valve in the coupler. Has any one successfully disabled the free flow preventer?
I'll likley put my tank in a bath...
I started out with a 5G AND a 10G Rubbermaid. I used the 5G as a HLT. ...and invented a cool fly sparing system. My system has since evolved...as yours will, but it is a pretty cool solution.
Shoal Creek Brewing: Fly Sparging - A new invention?
That is why I said 'pretty much' required. Sure you can mash in a 5G for a 5G batch, but you are very limited. Especially if you are targeting 5G of finished beer, you will be looking for 5.5G to the fermenter and 6-6.5G to the kettle.
I trying to provide good advice here. It would be...
I would swap the Centennial and Amarillo. Amarillo is best used as a finishing hops and has such a great aroma.
Also, you might think about swapping the Munich grain for 2-row for a traditional. You'll need to add a bit of crystal for color. This would allow the beer to really focus on...
Good food for the yeasties as well.
If you want to separate more trub, whirlpool the chilled wort (with a pump or spoon or something) then WALK AWAY. Let it sit for 20+mins to completely settle.
I wouldn't try to use any kind of filter or hop bag, etc. The small amount of tubr you might...
There is no reason to use a 5g igloo. A 10G is pretty much required for a 5G batch. The difference in price is about $25, which is cheaper than buying twice. Get the 10G.
Also hard to diagnose without knowing your sparging technique.
One of the most important steps is to stir, stir, stir. You need to be sure all of the doughballs are broken up.
I've seen several recipies that call for an extended 'Hot Whirlpool'. My question is, how hot is hot? I normally whirlpool for 10 mins or so before kicking on the chiller, but for an extended whirlpool, how high to I need to keep the temp? I'm guessing above 160 or so?
Looking to have a brew stand built - single tier, 26g kettles, including pilot lights and a BCS and/or BRUTUS system. Does anyone have any suggestions?
With all of the horrible stories about Brewers Equip, I'm very skeptical of ordering there.
I really don't need the burners or gas control....but what would you want for the brewstand with as assembled (including burners and stuff). Don't need any additional hardware.
Can anyone confirm the Corney capacity of this Freezer? Does not appear to be on the sticky 'Freezer Capacity' thread.
