    Seeing fermentation

    How important is watching fermentation activity for you? When I first started brewing I used one gallon glass jugs then moved to some gifted 3 and 5 gallon glass carboys. I got used to seeing the development of the yeast tsunami and krausen development. My wife harasses me that I check on my...

    Too early to bottle?

    I could be wrong but I think yeast does more than just ferment sugars into alcohol and C02. I think it was John Palmer that said to give the yeast time to clean up after themselves and this reduces off flavors.

    Grind = Crazy Efficiency

    I should probably clarify that double crushing at the LHBS had no effect but it could now that I have my own mill. I've just never found the need once I bought the mill and got it set to a gap which is a finer crush than the LHBS. I just assumed the LHBS had to set their mill to an average...

    Grind = Crazy Efficiency

    I agree. Double crushing never had a significant effect on my efficiency. Buying a grain mill had a tremendous effect. Brulosophy had a podcast regarding grain crush and if I remember correctly they were not impressed with double crushing either.

    Only fill their own growlers?

    State law here on filling only the brewery's growler. But our beer laws have been so backward for so long that just HAVING growlers is a plus.

    Survey: Lets hear why you prefer Propane over Electric Brewing

    Pardon the interruption for stupid question of the day: In general which is faster to get 8 gallons to a boil? (I've only used propane)

    carbonation/ inquiring minds want to know

    I use table sugar and it works. I keep things simple and I don't think the yeast care.

    SS Brewtech fermenter owners

    Thanks to both

    SS Brewtech fermenter owners

    What is the volume of the "conical" portion of the bottom of this fermenter? Do you ever have problems keeping dip tube above the trub when transferring? Thanks

    Good SMALL refrigerator for conditioning/lagering

    I've been looking for the same thing. Lowes has a Whirlpool mini fridge 4.3 cu ft without a freezer for $129 that I might buy. The Craigslist offerings are dismal in my area right now.

    Bottling procedure after long primary?

    Something that comes with experience of multiple brews: estimating how much beer you are actually bottling so you can accurately determine the right amount of priming sugar since you put it in the bottling bucket before transferring. Some recipes will leave a gallon of trub in the fermenter and...

    Fermentation with too small of a headspace?

    My favorite time. Brewing with dogs. Been there. Redbone or vizsla? My brew partner was a redbone. I keep a one gallon glass jug for the times when I have some extra wort to ferment.

    Glass Carboy Excitement

    https://www.carboy.net/ I have the covers for 3 gallon and 5 gallon. They work well and give you a secure handle. That said, I abandoned the 5 gallon glass and use buckets for 5-5.5gal batches. I still use the 3 gallon glass carboys.

    those who use buckets as fermenters

    Thanks Thinking it through I could not see a problem but going from glass where I can see fermentation kicking in to opaque plastic where I see nothing but airlock bubbles I just needed the reassurance. (no LODO here)

    those who use buckets as fermenters

    I'm moving away from glass carboys for 5.5g batches and I picked up 6.5g brew bucket with lid from LHBS. The lid has no gasket but seems to seal fine (no leaks when sanitizing). The LHBS says gasket not needed. The lid is tight to get on and really tough to remove. I'm getting airlock activity...

    Priming/carb question

    Due to a greater amount of trub than expected in my fermenter my batch ended up smaller and so I had too much priming sugar solution already in the bottling bucket. I ended up about 7 bottles short (48 expected, 41 bottled). I usually condition 10-14 days room temperature (mid 60's) then move...

    Anyone use one of these for a basket hoist?

    Did you ever use the deer hoist? I was looking at a tripod model that would fit over the kettle.

    wilserbrewer BIAB bags

    Since buying a grain mill I am now taking full advantage of my Wilser bag by crushing finer than I was getting from my LHBS. I don't fret about efficiency numbers but the mill gave me a better crush and the Wilser bag kept the fine stuff out of the kettle plus I was hitting my desired OG without...
