    I'm with you on that. I too brew in the kitchen and carry the fermenter to my ferm chamber in the basement. Age and shoulder problems have forced me to drop down to 2 1/2 gallon batches.     What about going all electric in your basement? Right where the rest of your equipment resides. Only down side is you'll have to vent off the steam from boiling.
