Can anyone shed some light on the differences between adding prior to boil vs mid-boil or flameout? I understand it can change color but I'm wondering if there are any effects on body or flavor.

No worries man, 20 minutes is not bad for a cooling time. My first batch with no IC took like 45 minutes and about 4 ice baths.

Even if the krausen had fallen, there would still have been a layer a CO2 gas in the carboy keeping it more or less "sealed" since it is heavier than oxygen. Unless someone was tossing debris into the opening, I don't think you have anything to worry about. So... RDWHAHB

I'm not sure I would be real worried. Was there a layer of krausen?
