First brew, Taking FG reading, Glass Carboy

No harm in opening it up for a quick sample. Use a sanitized turkey baster. It should be done by now, but no harm waiting longer.

    Flocculation and bottle conditiong question

Thanks for "clearing this up" I moved to 50 degrees after a couple days of no visible activity. (Weihenstephan yeast is VERY active). And, confirmed FG (1015) with a FFT. (OG 1065, FG 1015). My first batch had OG 1050, I think I improved my mash technique. lol I found this procedure from...

Candi sugar - my first time

Most table sugar is likely beet sugar. C&H is cane sugar. Does it really matter which one? I prefer cane sugar. After you live near a sugar beet factory for a few years, you really begin to hate the smell. :( Going to make a pound today with cane sugar for a Dubbel.

    Flocculation and bottle conditiong question

The short story here.... I started brewing extract beers in 2001-2004 and didn't know much about what I was doing. I just pitched whatever dried yeast the HBS had because it was cheap. I always had trouble with under-carbed beer. I just started brewing again using Wyeast 3068 (German...

    Milk chocolate stout

I took this recipe: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f68/dark-chocolate-stout-136707/ I increased the amount of lactose to 16 oz. Just bottled it 2 days ago, so no finished taste yet. But at bottling, it was a sweet tasting chocolate, no bitterness. I used about 1.25 ounce hallertau...

Received some brewing advice, is it legitimate?

Look into krausening for bottle conditioning. Save 2 qts of wort for krausening on bottling day. Then you would start with 4.5 gals in your 5 gal carboy. My last batch in the 5 gal carboy lost 1.5 qts of volume through the blow off tube.

Thank you Spaten! Franziskaner bottle foil now easy to peel :-)

Try Paulaner instead of Franziskaner, if you can find it. I'm not a fan of AB In-bev, especially after watching the documentary "Beer Wars". Now that I'm brewing my own German Heffe, I have no reason to buy it. Update on the bottles.... Ten days, and no leaks or blown caps. It is...

Thank you Spaten! Franziskaner bottle foil now easy to peel :-)

The Franziskaner bottles are like the one on the left. The problem is that the diameter of the opening is slightly smaller. The US bottles are .015" larger than the euro. I know we're splitting hairs here, talking about less than 1/2 of a mm. But it is enough to make the cap wiggle on the...

Thank you Spaten! Franziskaner bottle foil now easy to peel :-)

I just bottled a batch of my own Weissbier using the Franziskaner bottles. What a pain removing the foil and labels. After filling 16 bottles, I proceeded to cap. I noticed that it was harder than normal to keep the caps on straight with my handheld capper. When I finished, I compared the...
