If the green one is an 02 tank, a gas place won't fill it if it has any sort of medical labeling on it. If so, go to a scuba diving place. I went to one with an old medical 02 tank and the guy filled it, no problem. Keep the tanks and put them to use!

Removing the air lock (which I know is bad)... Actually, I take a paper towel, squirt rubbing alcohol on it, take the air lock out, put the paper towel over the air-lock hole, and drain the bottom valve. While some "air" (oxygen) gets into the conical, I haven't been able to detect any off...

Definitely consider a bottom drain option, especially if you're using kegs. I just built an electric, single tier, two pump, one PID, two 5500 elements and went with bottom drains. The bottom drain, if set up appropriately, will eliminate the scooping, etc., and better CIP. Check out Bobby...
