Temp Controller: Dual vs Single stage?

I don't think a dual stage temp controller has to be more expensive. Search on ebay for "STC-1000". It's a dual stage temp controller that you should be able to pick up for under $25. I have three of them.

    Chocolate Wheat and Dunkelweizen

Using the light munich might be tasty...just sub 2lbs of that for the 2lbs of 2-row or pils. Good luck.

    Chocolate Wheat and Dunkelweizen

I have used chocolate wheat in dunkelweizen many times. Once I used a pound. Tasted great but it was black as ink. No way would you use 3 lbs. I use half pound chocolate and a half pound C60 and it's still pretty dark in terms of style but it is delicious. I can post the recipe but that's...

Tinseth and boil volume - conceptual help!

Probably so, but like I said the difference in my case is 8% because of what I leave in the kettle. If you use Hopville.com the difference is even greater. If you are up around 10% difference that is getting significant. Anyway I can make good beer either way if I consistently use my own...

Tinseth and boil volume - conceptual help!

I know most people use Beersmith or some other software to develop recipes but I don't, I use an excel spreadsheet because it forces me to learn some things. One of those things are Tinseth's wonderful IBU equations. One of the key components of this calculation is the boil volume in gallons...

    Best chiller

I split my 1/2" IC chiller into two 22' coils, kind of like this but with 2 sections not 3. I have a CFC and prefer the IC. I have been focused on ease of use and cleanup. I chilled to high 60's in about eight minutes the other day (Chicago water is in the mid to high fifties right now). But...

    Hallertau and....

Thanks for the input. I have not tried Perle or Ultra, will give that some thought. Hallertau with Cascade...that could be interesting.

    Label Peelers says longer!

Seeing as how they've stated the hops are supposed to arrive in 3 business days, I would wait a bit longer before cancelling your order. And they do respond to requests to cancel or modify orders, you just have to submit it on the "contact us" page and include your order number and be patient.

Another Dump My Brew Thread Water Chemisty Edition

Sorry, I'm sure the water chemistry experts will chime in, I can't say whether this is fixable. But this thread had some decent info on treating alkaline water, some mention with lime. Others just suggest using RO water to dilute. Plus have you looked at Brewersfriend.com? They have a decent...

What's your occupation: Engineer or Non-Engineer

This is awesome. My consulting company develops medical products. A recent one involved noninvasive body-worn monitor networked via bluetooth/app back to a central server. The idea was to continually monitor people with ongoing conditions and help insure compliance with prescriptions, etc. Have...

Are Kegs, CO2 tanks, safe around small children?

In terms of making your wife feel better, make sure it is secured and kept away from kids as other have said, but she should understand that those tanks are over-engineered by a factor of 10X. Show her the expiration date on your cylinder, tell her they have to do hydrostatic testing on it every...

New to all-grain. Is Blichmann best?

If you are not comfortable cutting copper (it's pretty easy actually) then just take the 50' and coil it up. Find something 8-9" in diameter to wrap the tubing around. I used a corny keg but you might have a smaller diameter pot or something you could use. Then just put some tubing on it with...

    Label Peelers says longer!

OK my bad, just got an email response from them. I had run out of ways to contact them and just used their "contact us" page about 5-6 days ago. They addressed my issue (cancelling part of my order), were nice about it, and added this:

    Label Peelers says longer!

They do not answer emails and their phone is busy every time I tried to call them. I am trying to cancel part or all of my order, but they won't respond. I am not pissed off yet, but if I had not stocked up on hops elsewhere I would be. I think these are good guys trying to make a living that...

New to all-grain. Is Blichmann best?

I would get the 50'. I would make a chiller with at least 30-35 of it, then use the remaining to make a small coil for a "pre-chiller". If you have hot tap water during the summer, you would put the pre-chiller in some icewater to cool it down prior to sending it through the main chiller. 20'...
