    New Zealand Brewers

Had one of those homebrew days that's just no fun. Firstly I had to open and reyeast every bottle of one of my Fresh Hopped brews because the yeast had flocced too well and none had carbed Then i decided to bottle the Super Lazy IIPA 5L brew I had needed to bottle for a while. The beers turned...

    Hop Bottle

I'm bottling the Super Lazy IIPA today and from the hydrometer sample this is going to be a tasty beer, the bitterness is reasonable and the aroma and flavour are excellent, the only thing is the DME only let it get down to 1.020 so it's a little sweet for an iipa. But definitely a good option...

    Hop Bottle

I played around with it to see what calculations it would give with a 10min boil addition, with no sugar, as well and it gave about that IBUs. It's all just a guess so it could be anything, but we'll see, it may be bitter enough.

    Hop Bottle

I just brewed the Super Lazy IIPA. Bizarrely I got a 20% higher gravity from the dry malt extract than what Brewers friend said, so it ended up at 1.084 OG. I put the hops in the 2L bottle with 85C water then let them sit at room temp for 10mins then put it in cold water until it cooled down. I...

    Hop Bottle

As a test this weekend I'm going to brew a super lazy iipa. http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/227576/super-lazy-iipa All the hops will be thrown in a hop bottle whilst all the malt extract will go straight in the fermenter. I expect this to take me about 10 minutes to 'brew' and...

    Hop Bottle

Hi Culbetron, Yes I've seen that method before but I figured theres still some loss to steam and you're still pour off the water/wort when it's hot. My method is very similar, just another way of getting more hops in (you can never have too many hops :D). It would be good to do a side by side of...

I certainly will. If it does work I might try doing an entirely lazy batch of beer. Just DME and a hop bottle. could be interesting.

    New Zealand Brewers

Finally got some brewing done this weekend for the first time this year and the first time in our new house, it was also the first time I brewed with fresh hops! I did an IPA called The Fresh Prince of Nelson and an IIPA called Its always wet in Nelson. So as you can probably guess, they were...

    Hop Bottle

I've come up with a technique to create similar results to a hop back which I can't do with my BIAB setup. The idea is to put hops in a bottle with 85 degrees Celsius water, seal it up and chill it down as fast as possible. (you could use wort as well). I know it's similar to a hop tea however...

No, national homebrew comp. this weekend is the last chance for me to get some brews ready. Both today's brews went to plan although for some reason my efficiency on the second fell a little. I will probably do a small cider trial tomorrow too, just some good apple juice and yeast, not for the...

    New Zealand Brewers

4 brew weekend for me this weekend, got the first one done, The Good Ship Imperial, an IIPA with Centennial, Columbus and Waimea. Second mash is on which is another IIPA with only Waimea, called Waimea Pure and is the third time I've brewed it but each time has been different. Then tomorrow I'm...

I have a gorgeous copper pot still and some 2L barrels, turns out some pretty good results!

    New Zealand Brewers

Yeah absolutely, I'll let you know. I won't be doing the boil in the kitchen like I did when I did the peated one, although my wife wasn't too upset about the pungent bacon aroma hanging around for 3 days. That was when I was still doing partials or only small batch all grains so I didn't have...

Oh and I dry hopped a very small bit of the peated beer.. It was terrible. Hops and peat don't mix, well at least the hops I used Sent from my iPad using Home Brew

    New Zealand Brewers

I have brewed a 100% peated beer with only bittering hops, it was really good and I've just today ordered a kilo of the manuka to do a small batch 100% manuka smoked beer trial which I'll brew this weekend. I'll get a whole sack of it when Brewers Coop up here in AKL gets it but wanted to play...

    New Zealand Brewers

Yeah, I don't see any benefit in changing from 30L BIAB to 3 pot setup. More to clean, less lifting but that's it. And I hit 80% efficiency on a 11% American barley wine on Saturday. I do a kind of sparge by pulling the bag and putting it in my plastic barrel ferment suspended with bulldog clips...

You can still do all grain mini brews with 20L. I did 1kg of grain in a 8L pot for the first few months when I started brewing and would ferment it in a 3 to 5 L bottle. It was awesome to practise and easy to do on the stove (although don't do a 100% peated beer like yeastie boys Rex otherwise...
