How much can evaporative cooling change the fermentation temp?

Has anyone used the "T-shirt in water" method to reduce their fermentation temps? How much does it lower the temperature? I understand that the temperature change is a function of the evaporation rate, which depends on multiple factors (air temp, relative humidity, science, etc...). I'm happy...

Everything I have learned is wrong.

The logic this guy uses is the exact same logic as saying 100% of your meals should come from McDonalds. I don't know guys. I'm sure there's hundreds (thousands?) of people on this site who have made homebrews that didn't suck. That didn't taste watery, buttery, flat or soapy. That people...

Anyone brew 5 gallon batches on your kitchen stove?

    Sorry... It's a fairly new gas stove with a "17,000 btu Power Burner." {insert Tim Allen grunting here}

What advice do I need if I'm going to include bourbon in my beer?

Thanks, Calder! That's really good advice! It sounds really obvious now that you've said it, but I don't think I would have thought of that on my own. (Until the next person asks, and I claim the idea as my own!) I like all the info! I'm relatively new to this site, but it's been awesome so far!

Anyone brew 5 gallon batches on your kitchen stove?

Before I try this (and risk upsetting SWMBO), I figured I'd reach out to those who have already upset Her. Does anyone brew 5 gallon batches inside? And, if so, do you have any idea how big your burner is? I tried to boil 5 gallons on my old stove, just as a test, and the only thing I came...

What advice do I need if I'm going to include bourbon in my beer?

I've never done that but I think I want to give it a shot. Anyone with experience have any advice for me? Some questions I have are: 1) when do I add the bourbon? When I secondary? When I bottle? 2) how much bourbon should I add for a 5 gallon batch? (I'm looking for a hint of bourbon flavor...

Beer ideas for a pig roast

I love the feedback! I really appreciate everyone's thoughts. I'm not sure who it was that planted this seed, but I'm thinking two different beers are required - one light and fairly neutral and one with more flavor. For the more flavor beer, I have one in mind but need to do more research. I...

Beer ideas for a pig roast

Thanks all for the input. It's tough for me because I'm torn between making something everyone will like and making something a few ppl will like a lot. I mean, BMC already has the "mass appeal" thing figured out. But, then again, I do want it to be popular. I've got time to change my mind...

Beer ideas for a pig roast

Every other year we do a pig roast family reunion and this is an "on" year. It'll be in the fall, late September or early October. I'm looking for suggestions on what kind of beer to make. I don't have any way to do lagers, which is kind of a bummer. And I'm still too new to brewing to be able...

Capping a 22oz After Pouring Half

I use a wine bottle stopper in my open 22oz bottles. I've never needed to leave it in for more than 24 hours, so I wouldn't consider this a long term solution.

If lager is supposed to be such a neutral tasting beer, why is it that?...

Who waits until they're 21 to buy their first case of beer!?! Didn't they have chalk where you grew up?

Immersion Chiller - sub zero temps?

If ur married, there's almost no chance this will fly, but you can get an adapter to hook your hose up to your kitchen sink (or prolly any other faucet I guess). Just remove the aerator and screw in the adapter.

    the best homebrew video ever!!!

This makes me really regret not having posted enough to post pictures! I can't decide if that guy looks more like Napolean Dynomite's brother or one of the "d!ck in a box" guys!

    head retention...

I get why not enough carbonation is no good. But, then, what about the other end of the spectrum? Does a little over carbonating help with enhancing the taste? When does good head turn into too much head? (I guess now is as good a time as any for me to get very familiar with HBT's inappropriate...

    Ball Valve on Boil Kettle

I have a ball valve on my 8 gal boil pot without any filters or false bottoms. It works fine. I've tried a couple different things - pouring through a cheese cloth, pouring and then siphoning, etc... - but now I don't even bother. I just open the valve and dump straight into the fermenter. Maybe...

Prevent hop roots from spreading around

I've never grown hops but I do have mint plants and they spread like crazy if unchecked. What I did for my mint was built a square out of 1"x6" (or 8" - don't remember now) cedar planks and planted the mint inside that. I buried that "bottomless box" so that only an inch or so was sticking out...

    15 gal boil pot questions

I guess "new" is a relative term. I've done 4-5 extract brews and just bottled my 1st all-grain the other day. Not that I ever thought I had this brewing thing figured out, but this site really drove home how much I have to learn. Like cooling a 10 gal batch, for example. That would have never...

    15 gal boil pot questions

Hello all! I'm new to home brewing and to this site. So far both are awesome, and both reinforce how much I have to learn! Starting with a "new-to-me" 15 gallon beer keg boil pot. I had the top cut off by some guys at work with a plasma cutter but I'm kind of worried about getting cut on the...
