    Cider Kindergarten

I treated the cider one more time with campden tablets and potassium Sorbate. Put the carboy outside for a couple weeks with a low of 32*f. Yesterday we put it in mason jars. FG 1021. It seems to have stopped and tasted really good. It worked so far. David

I brewed today... man am I bushed!

Charlie P's request. First before brewing a batch, salute the previous batch. :) Two years ago I got a real hernia picking up my full hot HLT which is a keggle. I lifted it about 3 inches onto the forklift. This year I have a crank and pulley to lift the HLT for my 10 gallon all grain...

I brewed today... man am I bushed!

Yes, when I am done my azz is dragging. I do 10 gallon all grain. It takes just as long to clean up from 5 gallons as it does for 10. David

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

5 hour sparge. Longest ever. Last time it took 90 minutes. Collected 13.5 gallons. By the time the mash tun hose had bubbles in it (empty), brew kettle was 84*f. I hit my gravity mark, and now am boiling it off. Yeast packs are swelled and ready. Hoping for a great beer. Edit...

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

So far, an incredibly slow sparge. Plenty of time to go out and get a fresh tank of propane. Its a gravity system with a simple 1/4" copper tube drilled with a bunch of holes in a 1/4 sanke. I sort of expected this when I put the oats in. I have used rice hulls. Was out of them today...

Alternative to Siphoning (I hate it.. Help!)

I have to agree. I have been brewing for over 20 years. I went to SS conical fermenters a long time ago. I only siphon cider from a carboy, everything else is gravity. One of the best things is I clean and sanitize my fementer then fill from the brew kettle while the wort is still way...

    Mash tun size help

I have been brewing 10 gallon batches with a 7.5 gallon mash tun. It will hold 24 pounds of grain. This makes about a 1.066 wort for 12.5 gallons after brewing. I usually use 20 lbs. Grain. With a 5 gallon system a 10 gallon mash tun is too big. If you a are going to grow bigger, then...

Alternative to Siphoning (I hate it.. Help!)

I fill the hose with star san. Plug both ends with my hands. Put one end in the beer, other end in a catch pan. Let sanatizer run out When its beer, cover with thumb and put where you want it to go. I just use a hose, no auto siphon It all started when Iwas about 10years old needing...

    Stored keg cleaning?

I don't touch my empty kegs until it's time to refill. They stay clean except the old beer and yeast. They have sat for years at times with zero problems. Nothing lives in Co2. I use a dip tube brush every time. David

    Cider Kindergarten

the guy at one home brew shop told me put this in and it will stop it. Potassium Sorbate. At 1.022 I put the cider outside where it was in the 40s. Racked to another carboy, and added the required amount. Back in the basement (68*f) it started out fermenting again. Now its back...

    Blue Moon Clone

I used malted wheat. Last batch of just keeged, I put zest of 5 oranges and 5 limes. I added 1/2 cup of vodka to the zest. I let it sit a while, then put it in my conical after I had dumped the yeast (secondary). A week later, I kegged the beer. LOTS of citrus aroma and flavor. I did...

    WY2565, WY1007 - Kolsch vs German Ale

I used 1007 for a few years. I open fermented in a 1/2 sankey keg with the top cut out. It would leave a huge pancake on the top. ON the 6th day I would draw the beer of the yeast. Once I shook the keg and the yeast fell to the bottom. I waited a day and drew the beer off. Nice clean...

    Help, it won't stop.

I have 4.5 gallons fresh pressed cider. I added about 4 lbs sugar to some water. Heated sugar in water to disolve. I used S05 yeast. OG 1.070. At 1.020, I put the carboy outside where it was in the 40s f. After 2 days, I racked and added 2.5 tsp of potassium sorbate As soon as it...
