What's Actually Happening When you Pull a PRV? Like Sciencewise, Bro.

What an idiot! The 4 elements are obviously water, grain, hops, and yeast!

    No airlock activity

Part of my post-pitch process with my plastic buckets is to press gently/tap on the cover and observe the 3-piece airlock. If everything is seated correctly you will see bubbles or the cap piece jump in response to the pressure. If there is no obvious change then there is a leak somewhere where...

Not hitting into the keg gravity

It's not. Your gravity is fine. OG 1.049 and uncorrected refract FG of 1.026 calculates to ~1.013. http://seanterrill.com/2012/01/06/refractometer-calculator/

Poor Mash Efficiency with BIAB and Wheat

I've been milling the grains together under the (possibly wrong) assumption that 0.030" is 0.030". I will certainly try separate grain bills for the wheat and double milling it finer the next wheat-heavy batch to see if that helps.

Poor Mash Efficiency with BIAB and Wheat

I'm closing in on around 50 BIAB batches and my mash efficiency is pretty consistent around 81% using a full volume/no sparge/squeeze method. The exception to this is when I have a wheat-heavy recipe. Observed mash efficiency drops to around 60%-65% if I am around 50% wheat. All my grain is...

Boddington's Pub Ale clone without nitro?

Here is the recipe I used last year that was exact on color, close on taste: Recipe Specifications -------------------------- Boil Size: 7.25 gal Post Boil Volume: 6.25 gal Batch Size (fermenter): 5.60 gal Bottling Volume: 5.00 gal Estimated OG: 1.048 SG Estimated Color: 6.3 SRM Estimated...

What kind of fermentor are you using..

4 plastic buckets, plus 1 that I borrow from a neighbor if the pipeline requires it.

Dunkelweizen Kit at 1.023 gravity after 11 days

Are you me? Because I tried an all-grain Dunkelweizen last November and had horrible efficiency during the mash (57% instead of my normal 80-85%), had to let it sit overnight to cool since I couldn't find the fitting to connect my sink to the immersion chiller coil, and then had it stop at...

    Infected bucket for starsan storage

A plastic bucket with spigot is $17. If you are right and there isn't an issue: you will save $17. If you are wrong that there is an issue: you could infect every piece of your equipment and at least one batch of beer.

    Toilet doesn't flush fully

My guess is a loose handle or handle arm assembly. When you flush, the assembly is not being constrained appropriately and twists, meaning it can't pull up on the ball cock/flapper with correct force. That or something is up with the chain. First thing to look for is if the handle is sitting...

Intertap Flow Control Taps - Problems shutting off?

Has anyone else had problems with their Intertap Flow Control taps not shutting off? I just installed four Intertap FC and it seems like at least two of them sometimes don't want to shut off completely ... when you push the handle back and let go a small stream of beer continues to flow. If I...

    Kegged beer starts off watery

...and just like that, the two beers that I kegged last Saturday are no longer watery.

    Kegged beer starts off watery

I've tried shake, stepped force (30, 20, serving), and set and forget. I don't think it has happened with "set and forget", but the keg also sits for 7-10 days. Last night I dropped the regulator to 6 psi (from 11 psi) and pulled the release on both kegs. Today they are both more flavorful...

    Kegged beer starts off watery

For reference, the two lagers that were kegged on Saturday and tapped today are: Festbier Batch Size (fermenter): 5.60 gal Bottling Volume: 5.00 gal OG: 1.058 SG FG: 1.012 ABV: 6.0% Color: 4.1 SRM IBU: 23.1 IBUs Brewhouse Efficiency: 75.00 % Amt Name...

    Kegged beer starts off watery

Most recent example: 8/26 Brewed two batches: "Three Crops" and an English Pub Ale 9/8 Kegged both 9/9 Both tasted thin 9/10 Still thin 9/11 Still thin 9/14 Tasted great What I don't know is if that one week was an aging process or did I work my way through the remaining yeast that was at the...

    Kegged beer starts off watery

On almost every beer I've kegged the flavor has been "watery" and "thin" initially with a weird bite. This seems to be the case no matter what happens before tapping ... short/long fermentation, cold crash or not before kegging, quick/long primary, burst or force carbonation, gelatin in bucket...

    Vodka in airlock

Are you talking about in a blow-off jug or three-piece airlock? When I use a three-piece bubbler neither the vodka or stars evaporate at all. Now that I think about it, my blow off jug with starsan doesn't really evaporate either.

    Vodka in airlock

I assume by "can't see" you mean a layer of bubbles at the top of the liquid in the airlock. I'm not sure but I believe it has to do with surface tension. When a bubble reaches the surface through a star stan filled airlock the surface tension holds it together for some amount of time. If the...

Anybody make the Oberon kit from Bell's?

I have not brewed that kit, but put together a recipe that came out pretty darned close. The recipe has only minor differences from the Bell's Store. Note that instead of the yeast listed, I harvested and cultured from two bottles of Oberon. Recipe: Oberon Recipe Specifications...

What 6+ beers for Oktoberfest party?

Marzen = Amber, toasted maltiness. Most American breweries call this an "Oktoberfest". Festbier = Pale/Golden, malty with only light toast. What is actually served in the tents at Oktoberfest.
